Easy to get here on the East to West Ferries from Queens Wharf. Had a lovely time and walked around the island twice skink, bird and view watching. Would be keen to come back and do an overnight trip.

There's something about being on an island that feels like the middle-of-nowhere yet being able to see the capital city of the country and hear the traffic noise across the harbour! We were here in a stinking hot day in December and it was too...More

We took the little ferry over on a sunny Saturday morning. It was quite busy. On arrival, you are met by a DOC volunteer and are asked to make sure you are not bringing any insects etc. onto the island with you. The island itself...More

I've always thought that the best way to enjoy nature is just to put yourself in a beautiful place like this, open your eyes and ears, and hope you'll see something memorable. If you're lucky - if the weather, the wildlife, and the other people...More

We caught the 10am ferry from Queens wharf and a beautiful calm Wellington day made the ferry journey spectacular. Upon disembarking a briefing is given by doc staff regarding etiquette of the island , including checking all bags for any unwanted insects, leaving no rubbish,...More

The island itself was fine. Beautiful views and walks. Getting there and back was awful. The ferries have no way of managing on a busy day. We arrived in time to catch the 10:30ish ferry, which was running late. It arrived, half full, to well...More

Perfect place for a small getaway. You have to be early to get a ticket on the ferry! It’s educational and relaxing at the same time. Make sure to pack some Picknick!

We did a tour to get here, so we had over 2 hours to roam. We did the full hiking route around the circumference of the island, though none of us are in shape. It was well worth the huffing and puffing. Views are incredible.

For the price of the ferry ride, one would expect to see a little more on this island. Other than seeing a few sheep & a common skink, not much to see here. We walked around the island easily & quickly & had to wait...More

When you look out at Wellington harbour you'll see Matiu/Somes Island in the middle of it. It's reached via a short 15 min East by West ferry trip, which can be caught from the waterfront near Waggamama's restaurant. A pest free DOC reserve and a...More

There must be a utility vehicle or two on the island, as there are roads, plus a visitor center and some simple lodging to service. But, without knowing for sure, I would tend to doubt that they'd be available for visitor... More

As you will have seen no, there isn't a Seatoun ferrry. We usually go from Days Bay because there is free parking there, and good coffee, ice-creams and food over the road so you can get your fix before leaving.

Yes, it is a great place to take the kids. I think you could even get around with a buggy for a lot of the island. There is one very steep track but you wouldn't need to go up it. Just take all you need for the day... More
