A delightful day spent roaming the NZ countryside just a short train ride from Wellington. A pleasant scenic journey of just one hour saw us pass the Wellington harbour and then out thru the suburbs and on to open farming country before alighting at Featherston where we were met by Naomi our driver and guide for the day. After a short introduction all round (three of us family and friend) we were off. We drove thru the town of Featherston and then it was morning tea time. After a short break and toilet stop we were off for a drive thru the surrounding area to our first winery which was fabulous. We got to hear the vintner talk about his passion and then the best part a tasting of some of his beautiful wines. From there it was off to see some more of the countryside then into another winery which was also lovely. Unlike some of the winery tours in Australia this tour focuses on the boutique in the business and this made it special. Soon it was time for lunch! Another cafe and the food was plentiful and delicious. Shared platter and salad with lots for everyone. Off again to enjoy the lovely countryside and more delicious wine tasting before, hello it was afternoon tea. Again the food was delicious and by this time all we could think off was a nice sleep somewhere for after all we had been up early, travelled, ate and drank and heard great commentary, what more could one need but a snooze in the warm afternoon sun. All too soon we had to bid farewell to our lovely guide to take the train ride home, back to reality. A great day out - you will not be disappointed.

Our Guide Karen was born in Wellington. She was able to spend time pointing to things of interest around the city. I love history and to find out how much of the water front is on reclaimed land surprised me. We took a ride in the cable car up from Lambton Quay to Kelburn at the top of the hill. From there we went down to the Rose gardens a lovely setting with native trees around the gardens. So many of the old houses are built into the hills.. For a small city in area there is a lot to see. The trip is well worth it. The view from Mount Victoria gives you a 360 degree view around the city

We booked a side excursion away from our tour with Hammond Tours for what we thought was a train wine trip. While we did get to our destination by train, the wine tasting was not actually on the train. We took a train from Wellington, NZ to Martinborough and met up with a guide, Naomi. What a fun lady she was! She was very nice, fun, bubbly, and a good driver. She drove my husband and I, along with two other couples in a van to a couple of wineries in the Martinborough area. The wineries were informative and interesting, with sufficient pours. We then went by van to a cafe (Cafe Medici) and had a very delicious lunch. Naomi then took us to two more wineries in the area, also nice. We then ended our day back at the same cafe for dessert and coffee. The van then took us back to the train station for our ride back to Wellington. All in all it was a wonderful day trip. It started about 8:00 and we were back at our hotel by 5:00, so it's an all day event. I would recommend this for a nice excursion if you have a free day.
The wineries that you visit vary by when you go, which makes it more interesting and fair.
If nothing else, it would be nice just to visit Cafe Medici for the wonderful food and wine they serve!

The Gourmet Wine Tour is an absolute must. Naomi was the best of tour guides, throwing local lore in with the expertise you’d expect from a tour like this. The visit to Hamden Estate was, by far, my favourite. Our host & owner, David, was the perfect combination of humbleness & knowledge. His obvious pride in his product brought it alive for us & his selection of wines were excellent. I was a solo traveller but Naomi doesn’t allow anyone to be left out. Within the first 5 minutes she had everyone engaged. Great food, great company & excellent wine.

Be aware that this tour covers a lot of distance so it’s a road trip more than a sightseeing trip. Our driver and guide was a knowledgeable local and we were in a comfortable minivan with one other customer. It would have been nice if the schedule included a bit of time in Martinborough, which is quite a picturesque village.

My husband and I took the three hour bus of Wellington, NZ. The tour enabled us to see the sights of Wellington with 12 other people. It was a great way of establishing which sights we would revisit as a couple over the next few days. I recommend this tour if you wish to see the city sights in three hours.

We visited four vineyards and the brewery. Was an enjoyable day, but when we got to the brewery they tried to charge us for the drinks which were pre-paid. One of the vineyards also commented that we were late, even though we were being driven by the tour operator.

Took a half day city tour of Wellington and it was simply outstanding. The guided tour was mostly from inside the bus with a few stops including Mount Victoria, the botanical garden and Old St.Paul church. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable, informative, interactive and courteous. Would certainly very highly recommend this tour company to any tourist in Wellington.

We are a group of four on the celebrity solstice in Wellington. From 8 to 6 on Friday April 17th. Can we participate in the wine tour within those time perimeters?
Written 6 February 2020
The Pallisers Bay tour that I booked was an all-day guided tour for myself and 3 family members. Therefore, it would not have been possible to have only done the wine tasting portion of the tour, which occurred at the end of the day.
I suggest you e-mail them directly and ask your question. I found them to be extremely friendly and responsive.
Have fun on your trip!

We will be on celebrity cruise ship arriving at 8am on February 10, 2016 and departing at 6pm. Would we have time to take your tour? where would we join the tour in relation to where the ship is docked?
Written 16 January 2016
I only did the city and surrounds tour it was a half day tour. The tour company can meet you at the ship. More economical option than ships tours in our experience. The tour company would advise you regarding beer tasting tour times.

Hello Deepa,
We would love to have you join the Hammonds City Sights Tour. They depart at 10am and 2pm daily from the Wellington I-SITE, at the corner of Victoria and Wakefield Street. I suggest you look at the 2pm but have one concern regarding your check in time with the Interislander. Please confirm what time you need to be at the Interislander and we will see what we can do.
Kind Regards,
Robin
