- Very angry customer8 contributionsBrilliant! It was such a great experience, the tour guide was fun and hilarious! The driver who picked me up for the tour was also lovely, we had a great conversation about Wellington and the north and south islands. Just a great experience and would recommend to anyone, a must do.Visited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 2 April 2023
- TerryHHertfordshire, United Kingdom1,080 contributionsOutstanding workshop memorabiliaWe arrived early and spent a fair time looking around the excellent shop. The Staff were both helpful and passionate about the shop. Our tour was very interesting with the right amount of information plus some interaction at the end. Phenomenal prosthetics and weapons made for Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies as well as King Kong. Well worth a visit.Kia Ora, Thank you so much for coming to visit us and for submitting your feedback. We are so glad to hear that you enjoyed your experience with us. We'd love to welcome you back to Wētā Workshop anytime you want to further explore our little corner of Middle Earth! - VJCMelbourne35 contributionsFun interactive experience for the whole familyWhat a fantastic interactive experience! Myself and my husband took our two kids aged 8 and 10 and they had the best time. They loved the fact you could touch everything and it was really interesting. Our tour guide Ally was very funny and engaging. They loved all the different experiences and learnt so much.Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 April 2023
- Julie G2 contributionsFascinating, educational, playful experienceFascinating 90 min tour of the Weta Cave at the Weta Workshop, Wellington. Small group tour with a friendly knowledgeable enthusiastic guide, Liam. I think we all felt like kids in a candy store. The tour was authentic including meeting some of the people who work at Weta - there was a feeling of their genuine passion for what they do. It was a great learning experience as well as the enjoyment of seeing and hearing how some of my favourite movies have been madeVisited April 2023Travelled soloWritten 17 April 2023
- AylcombeAuckland Central, New Zealand1 contributionWould you like that wound to be fresh? Or old and infected?I took my son here for a school holiday activity. The tour was just incredible. Such talent in this company with creative inspiration everywhere. We followed up with the horror workshop and created ghastly wounds on each other. These were clearly realistic as a kind, concerned gentleman stopped me in the lift, nodding towards the gaping, oozing wound on my hand and said "are you alright? Would you like me to get some help?" My son was delighted. My only disappointment was that we ran out of time to add the pus and maggots. .Visited March 2023Written 23 April 2023
- Meagan HToowoomba, Australia19 contributionsGreat ExperienceFantastic! We haven’t seen lord of the rings so weren’t sure we would understand/get it but it was a great experience for everyone. From the 8 yr old to us mid 30’s parents. All employees were so passionate which was lovely to seeVisited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 20 September 2023
- Caitlin DBrisbane, Australia4 contributionsFantastic TourWhat a fabulous experience! I couldn’t believe how good this tour was especially if your a big Lord of the Rings and Hobbit fan. For the price of 84 dollars getting picked up from Wellington CBD and dropped off the price was really reasonable , we had a lovely driver and tour guide , well done Weta Workshop!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 October 2023
- Huell29 contributionsBehind the scenesDoors open at 08.45, we went with first tour at 09.00 — excellent and would recommend the tour, you see many exclusive items and non-photography allowed in there. Meet the makers behind the movie attire! Good gift shop. Campervans, do not come here — take bus or Uber instead, narrow streets in family neighbourhood makes for parking spaces unavailable. Make sure to prebook!Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 November 2023
- GortyGUrk, The Netherlands9 contributionsGreat For Humans - And Hobbits! When I first tried to enter this place during my month stay in New Zealand, I had the help of a little Hobbit I had acquired in the bathrooms of Auckland International Airport. He agreed to accompany me when I offered him food and lodging with myself and my wife - he appeared particularly motivated by sweets for some reason, when I thought Hobbits liked mushrooms? He also didn't have very big feet. Anyways first time we came here it turned out that having a Hobbit to vouch for you "wasn't criteria for entry" and we had to book ahead. So, we booked and after taking the Hobbit to his homeland in Matamata - he appeared very confused and didn't seem to know anyone - we finally got to see the weta workshop. It was very good, but our Hobbit, Mike, again didn't seem to know much and people kept misidentifying him as American for some reason. Quite prejudiced if you ask me. Great sets, Thunderbird exhibit was fascinating as I didn't know they made a remake, and our tour guide was very knowledgeable. Excellent for all ages, and humans and Hobbits alike.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 19 November 2023
- jamieclowerSilverado, California38 contributionsReally nice! LOTR treasures en masseThis was a great experience - really enjoyed getting up close and personal with the chain mail, hobbit ears, animatronics and more from Lord of the Rings and other great films. Highlight was seeing and learning about the sword making done right there in the workshop. No photos allowed through the majority of the experience. Really loved hearing directly from talented Weta employees at different stations throughout. Workshop is nestled into a neighborhood, parking can be tricky. We were 20 minutes late arriving for the last tour of the day and the staff was fantastic in making sure we were still able to enjoy the experience.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 November 2023

I actually visited twice in one week...because once is not enough! Highly recommend it for anyone who's at least a tiny bit interested in this type of movie magic. Our guide Liam is a natural born entertainer, making the visit absolutely unforgettable!

Amazing! This experience was by far one of the highlights on our trip. We had an awesome tour guide threeam aka the third Liam. Who answered every single question and had so much knowledge on costumes, movies, actors and much more. No photos allowed and we understood as people could copy the ideas etc. It is really reasonably priced.. we booked on Agoda. I was a little confused with the two addresses but once we got there we understood. It's on the corner of two streets. Thank you threeam and the team at Weka!!!

I loved it! I really enjoyed our tour guide and learning about the expansive scope of Weta Workshops in the entertainment industry today. I loved being in the room with all the incredible replicas from my favorite films!
There are public transit options for the transfer also. If you have your own car, I recommend driving there yourself so you can explore the area around the studio or make stops along the beautiful, scenic beaches along the way.

The place is out of town, but easily accessible. The German tour guide (sorry forgot her name) was excellent and guided us around the tour with lots of information, extra to the set up video reels. Didn't know the breadth of what they have been involved in.

Absolutely wonderful to see how they create things used in the movies. So impressed with the attention to detail, the patients of the actors who have masks moulded over their face. I just found it incredibly interesting.

This tour was so so fun and interesting - our tour guide was super friendly and knowledgeable. Getting to see real costumes/props from one of the best film franchises ever made and see all the work and detail that goes into production was unbelievable. A 10/10 experience - I will definitely be back!

Firstly our guide was sooo enthusiastic! The video at the beginning was great...introduced us to the history of the workshop we were about to enter. To see all the various aspects involved in what WETA does was amazing. We were very impressed with everything. We have & will continue to recommend this tour to everyone. Congrats to everyone involved in WETA!!

Hello,
I am planning to come on mid-Januray. Is it necessary to book in advance at this period? Or can we book the day before or even directly the day of the tour?
Thanks.

Hi Kinder71,
I would recommend booking in advance by at least a few days if you can. January is within the busiest time for tour bookings.
Cheers,

Is there parking at the Weta Studios? And how much does it cost if there is?

Yes just park up along any side road to the studio and walk. There are a few limited lots near the studio itself.

Is it suitable for young kids? 5 & 6 year olds . A visit to Weta Cave and workshop?
Weta Workshop Tours
Wellington, New Zealand10 contributions
Kids and grownups of all ages can enjoy both our tours, we tend to find the Miniatures Stage Tour to be favoured by younger children since it is more colourful & interactive, and also based around kids TV show Thunderbirds Are Go!
The documentary is not compulsory - just an added bonus for guests to the Weta Cave retail shop :) our There & Back Again tour option include priority seating to the documentary.

Where does the there and back tour pick up. it says I site but then it shows a different local on google maps when I searched for it. Just a bit unsure really.

The pick up is on the footpath a little way along from the information centre - the I site. It is a tour bus pick up point and other tours also pick and set down from there. You can see the I site building from the bus stop.
Hola! Se puede hacer el tour en español?

Hola! cuando yo compré el ticket no me daba la opción, por lo que no creo que haya esa opción, el Tour lo hacen los mismos empleados del estudio y son de habla inglesa.

Hi. My wife & I are doing a cruise & one of the ports is Wellington. Can we arrange a visit to Weta studios when we disembark? Also are there buses to convey cruise passengers from wharf to the studios & back?
Andrew B
Wellington, New Zealand5 contributions
There are public buses from the railway station (about 100 metres from the cruise boat wharf) to Miramar. The easiest way to work out how to get there is to search for the Metlink website which lets you type in your location (eg railway station) and then gives you the bus options to your destination (eg Weta Workshops). If there are a few of you, then a taxi or taxi van may be an inexpensive option. While you are in Miramar I recommend you take time to see the Roxy Cinema - it has a great cafe/restaurant and was restored by Peter Jackson the the Weta crew in an art deco style.
