Lovely easy walk
Apr 2021 • Family
Mainly flat easy walk. Enjoyed the one km tunnel. Do not need a touch.
Very popular walk and more than one walk so plenty of choose for all groups.

An easy but really unique walk
Feb 2021 • Solo
A short walk but really interesting and fun. I went as a solo female and felt very safe, although it would be a great walk for kids too. Bring a torch (phone torch works fine) to explore some of the tunnels. The walk is pretty easy and the only gradient is climbing the stairs at the beginning. I would definitely recommend this to anyone.

Great walk with lots to experience!
Jan 2021 • Family
We have a 7 year old and a 10 year old and we loved exploring the tunnels and the bridges! Don’t forget a torch it’s really dark in one spot! The walk under the rock faces is interesting! Take some water and snacks it’s about 1 hour once you stop to take some photos and amble round depending on where you start!

Amazing Views and Tunnels
Aug 2020
The views in the gorge from the windows are amazing, and the trek through tunnels are fun (not for the claustrophobic). Be sure to take a torch (flashlight) - we planned ahead and had one - it would not have been as much fun with a cell phone light.

Must do walk
Jun 2020 • Couples
This was a fabulous walk that exceeded our expectations. An easy one hour loop took us over swing bridges, cliff faces and through old disused gold mining tunnels. Stunning scenery and really felt like we were on a movie set. Highly recommend

Our Favorite Short Walk in NZ
Feb 2020
This is our favorite short walk in all of New Zealand. The trail passes through a historic gold mining site, complete with mining artifacts, railroad tracks, and mining tunnels. The walk is named for the openings in the tunnels ("windows") that allow hikers to view the spectacular river gorge below. Suspension bridges cross the river on this easy 2.5 km loop. The walk can be easily accessed from State Hwy 2, which leads to a large public parking area.

Fabulous walk with the family
Mar 2020
This easy walk through the gorge and tunnels is a must do if you are in the area. Good tracks along the river and interesting industrial history. Kids loved the tunnels. Highly recommended

Easy walk but take a torch - suitable for 5yrs +
Mar 2020 • Couples
Was surprised to find this walk was free. Easy walking in most areas. Some steep stairs so only suitable for healthy people. Not suitable for wheel chairs.
Some steepish drop-offs so kids need to be obedient and supervised.
It's very dark in some of the tunnels so make sure you take a torch or use your mobile torch. Ground is a little slippery inside the tunnels so wear suitable footwear.
Some nice views of the gorge from the "windows" inside the tunnels.
Very interesting and definitely worth a visit.

Spectacular place
Jan 2020 • Family
This walk is truly amazing. Years ago I did the long rail tunnel walk but this one must not have been opened up. It is quite short but spectacular and unlike anywhere I have been before. Also a good
Swimming hole in the river. They even have a Toyota Guardian post (which we forgot about) The only problem with this place is that the rest of the world has found about it too. A total nightmare finding a park in the carpark. I am sorry, but I have to admit to being a bit sad about this.

Thoroughly enjoyable walk and views.
Dec 2019
Thoroughly enjoyable walk and views. The track is well maintained and is an easy walk for most. But the views, which are right up through the narrow gorge are striking.
