Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I love this walk, but unfortunately only half of the track was open today. We drove from Papamoa to complete it, and 100 school children were also doing it as part of their term study. None of us knew that there are some serious slips on the river side of the walk, closing it. Luckily we could go through the tunnels with the windows and complete half of the walk.

What a great short hike. Keep in mind there are a fair number of stairs but otherwise an easy walk for unique and breathtaking sites. The gorge is nearly indescribable and the mining ruins were a fun quirky find for our 19-24yr old kids. Only warning- parking fills extremely quickly in summer as many other NZ spots. We elected to walk a couple extra miles by parking at the next lot near the waterfall. The waterfall was ok but the walk on that whole portion wasn’t nearly as interesting as the Windows Walk.

You cant get access to the inside part but can continue on around other parts of the walk seeing mining relics along the way. Nature is claiming the land back which makes it the more interesting to see and plenty of information boards showing what it used to be used for and how it looked. Quite fascinating and in a bush walk too. Kids would really enjoy it. The rail tracks still there and a skip. There are a few stairs but it is well maintained. Will definitely be back to finish off the track.

Mainly flat easy walk. Enjoyed the one km tunnel. Do not need a touch.
Very popular walk and more than one walk so plenty of choose for all groups.

A short walk but really interesting and fun. I went as a solo female and felt very safe, although it would be a great walk for kids too. Bring a torch (phone torch works fine) to explore some of the tunnels. The walk is pretty easy and the only gradient is climbing the stairs at the beginning. I would definitely recommend this to anyone.

We have a 7 year old and a 10 year old and we loved exploring the tunnels and the bridges! Don’t forget a torch it’s really dark in one spot! The walk under the rock faces is interesting! Take some water and snacks it’s about 1 hour once you stop to take some photos and amble round depending on where you start!

The views in the gorge from the windows are amazing, and the trek through tunnels are fun (not for the claustrophobic). Be sure to take a torch (flashlight) - we planned ahead and had one - it would not have been as much fun with a cell phone light.

This was a fabulous walk that exceeded our expectations. An easy one hour loop took us over swing bridges, cliff faces and through old disused gold mining tunnels. Stunning scenery and really felt like we were on a movie set. Highly recommend

This is our favorite short walk in all of New Zealand. The trail passes through a historic gold mining site, complete with mining artifacts, railroad tracks, and mining tunnels. The walk is named for the openings in the tunnels ("windows") that allow hikers to view the spectacular river gorge below. Suspension bridges cross the river on this easy 2.5 km loop. The walk can be easily accessed from State Hwy 2, which leads to a large public parking area.
