On the strong advice of our host, we almost reluctantly visited the Karangahake Gorge. How could an old gold mining area be interesting? It was amazing. A scenic and informative hike not to be missed.

Free carpark along road fills up quickly on weekends. Some mining artifacts. This is a fairly easy free-access loop walk if you don't mind a few stairs and some darkness. We started across the bridge crossing the river and climbed stairs to the level of...More

We planned to be there for less than an hour. Ended up taking pictures for over 2 hours. Amazing place. Free of charge. A definite must see.

Great place to visit, loved taking the bike ride with kids from Waihi train station. Easy ride and very scenic. Great place to look at local history and even do some fishing.

First thing is bring a torch. Beautiful walk taking into the tunnels as you walk up the valley. Make sure you do the 1km long tunnel which adds a small loop, but well worth it.

It's a great short walk and has got lots of good photo spots - very beautiful part of the country, take a torch for some of the tunnels can be a bit dark on a dull day!

What a beautiful experience! The views were stunning and the walk energizing but not exhausting. We were with a group of young teens and they managed well on the 90 minute trek. Not to be missed!!

This wonderful little spot nestled half way from Waihi to Paeroa is a great way to experience our mining days and the lengths people would go to get gold. There are several grassed areas beside the river for picnics but please if taking children keep...More

Our family did the rail tunnel walk. We took our dog on leash with a poo pick up bag. The tunnel itself is 1km and will need a torch even thou it is lit up but very dim. Took us about 1 hour and 15...More
