A nice little side jaunt up through the steam pipes to the lookout, where you see the whole layout below you. Awesome sight. Possible small children wouldn't appreciate it, but to see it is a good way to appreciate geothermal power!

New Zealand produces 6.2 tera-watt-hour of geothermal energy, 10% of its national production. Bravo ! A pity that no visits are organized on this industrial site (it does not make enough profit??). But you can drive through the field, up to a lookout point with...More

I am really interested in alternative energy and as a teacher would have loved a tour of the plant but none is available.

A small parking lot, view on the facilities, a small sign with some very basic information and some buzzwords. That's it. No walking through, no close distance to the facilities or additional information. It's nice but Wikipedia is more informative.

If you want to see a geothermal power station it’s the perfect place ! There are a lot of long pipes and some vapeur to release the pressure. The panel at the top is very instructive. To go there (lookout), take the road for Wairakei...More

I would have loved a tour of the power station, which were evidently available once but now you can simply drive to an overlook of the well field to the west of the highway. (Note that there are a few misleading reviews here that are...More

As you drive toward Taupo, you may wonder, as we did, about the steam rising around the bend. Before it reveals its source as the geothermal power station, you pass a dam equipped with turbines to generate hydroelectric power, giving you an opportunity to pause,...More

The power station is very interesting and you are able to drive all the way through it - quite good to do in the winter. It might be that there are guided tours or similar during other months - worth checking the web site or...More

Come for the 2-hourly gate opening. 10, 12 and 2 in winter, to see the torrents of water fill up the previously mirror-like pool beneath the dam with surging milky-blue turbulent water.

This is a road which winds through the thermal power station up to a look out at the top of the road. It was not clear as we drove along the road and few times we nearly turned around - but we pushed on and...More
