We only got to see it from outside as it was closed for the day. You may check the opening hours before going there. When we arrived was about 2 pm on a Saturday and it was closed. Or, you may organise it through the...More

Took a school group to visit the power station. The staff were fantastic and provided a lot of information about how the station operated. Very interesting and lots of great learning!

It only takes a few minutes to drive through this very interesting feature to a viewpoint at the top, but it's certainly worth it. You can read at the viewpoint how it all works. Truly amazing. We were just waiting for James Bond to appear...More

I have never seen such an intricate set up harnessing natural energy. Fascinating. And it was done 60 odd years ago. Ingenious!

Well worth stopping the car at a couple of the public viewing spots and taking a look at the convoluted pipes that run through the countryside. Lots of steam hissing and on some days growling out of the overflow vents making huge white fluffy clouds...More

A nice short detour from the main road. Good views of the infrastructure from the access road. Nice view of the field from the lookout at the top.

Wonderful drive through steam and pipes, a free place and not well advertised in the area, it is a drive to a lookout with lots of information but feels like an alien world.

The viewing point for the Wairakei Geothermal Power Station was marked on our recommended tour map and it was very close to the geothermal spa we had just visited. We made the short drive up the mountain to the viewing point and were not disappointed...More

Actually we took the wrong turn off and ended up at this place that looked like a secret government mission, cut straight out of the 'X-Files'. Yes, it is a bunch of long pipes, steam here and there...but its free and self-guided.
