About Sail Barbary - Eco Sailing Taupo
Our electric yacht is 100% sustainable, emissions and noise free, making it climate safe, and Lake Taupo’s best sailing experience. We have been sailing to the iconic Maori Rock Carvings since 1982! This all-year-round activity offers relaxation, fun and adventure on the water, the Kiwi way. Get right up close to this culturally significant 46 foot (14m) high rock art. Excellent, amusing and current commentary on lake, the volcanics and the carvings. Free refreshments including tea, coffee, hot chocolate and mulled wine (winter only). We are licenced but you are welcome or bring your own. Swimming is encouraged. Sail Barbary is the only boat in Taupo rated 'Qualmark Gold' by Tourism NZ under the 'sustainable business' category.

We had such a great time sailing out to Maori Rock. We booked through Reb Balloon which was not very easy to do, no fault of this company!! If you seem to be having issues just call through to Sail Barbary direct and they can help to complete the booking. Once on the phone Tiffany was helpful and able to get this processed. We would definitely recommend this company to take you out for a lovely trip on the lake.

The whole trip, from the ease of booking to the final docking was amazing! A bucket list item ticked off for our family of four for sure. The skipper's stories were interesting and full of humour. He explained everything so nicely, especially for nervous sailors (which reassured them!). The Maori carvings are fascinating. We will return in the summer and hopefully can swim! Thank you!

We had a wonderful and very relaxing afternoon sailing in Barbary to visit the beautiful Māori rock carvings. The captain gave an entertaining and interesting commentary, with lots of kiwi jokes thrown in for good measure. Very enjoyable and we highly recommend.

Hi Suzie, thank you so much for the recommendation. I'm guessing you had Chris as your skipper, he is a very humorous sailor. He will be pleased you enjoyed his commentary.

I have been a returning passenger on the Barbary for years. Every time I can, I take friends from Melbourne out on the Barbary. We went on Easter Monday and (unfortunately) it was so calm we couldn't put the sails up, but it was just a magical experience. If there is only one thing you can partake in when in Taupo, its the Barbary!!

Thank you so much for leaving us such a fabulous review. You made our day! We are thrilled that you love our experience so much that you bring back friends to share and enjoy it with you. As you will know when the weather is involved, a sailing experience is always different. Some days calm and tranquil other days breezy and exciting. So thanks for your kind words and we look forward to seeing you again.

Very relaxing way to see the Maori rock carvings. The sails were up, but unfortunately there was not quite enough wind to be able to cut the engines entirely, but still a lovely way to cruise out to the carvings. Captain Kerry was very knowledgeable and friendly.
