Sail Barbary to the Maori Rock Carvings on Great Lake Taupo, New Zealand....

Sail Barbary to the Maori Rock Carvings on Great Lake Taupo, New Zealand. Sail Barbary is an all-year-round top rated Taupo activity; offering relaxation, fun and adventure on the water the Kiwi way.

Taupo's 14-meter high Maori Rock Carvings are possibly the largest of their type in the world and are a must-see attraction, only accessible by boat. Sail Barbary has been offering sailing cruises to these carvings since 1983.

Soak up the sun or roll up your sleeves; you can take the wheel, help hoist the sails or just sit back and enjoy the view. You’re guaranteed amazing photo opportunities as you experience one of life’s postcard moments. You can even BYO (Bring Your Own) food and beverages. Things really couldn’t get more Kiwi!

As New Zealand’s only two commercially operated electric yachts - We're equipped for all conditions; if the wind dies down, Barbary's eco-friendly electric engine kicks in, moving noiselessly through the water. When the wind is up, you can enjoy sailing without salty sea-spray and noisy outboard motors. Warm ponchos are supplied.

Sail Barbary cruises to the Maori Rock Carvings depart daily at 10.30am, 2.00pm, and 5.00pm (*5.00pm Summer Only).

We don’t promise the best cruise on the lake, we deliver it!

Our captain was very knowledgeable about the area, and volcanoes. It was a cold day but fleece lined ponchos were provided, as well as tea/coffee later. A very enjoyable sail, the carvings were worth seeing, even if they are only 30 yrs old. For the price it's one of the best deals on the area

Such an excellent experience with the team at Sail Barbary sailing on Lake Taupo to see the Maori rock carvings. Our skipper Jamie couldn't have been more accommodating in ensuring everyone on board had an amazing trip with music and local knowledge of the surrounding area. My friend and I really enjoyed our time with Jaime, the skipper. He was funny and educational to listen to. Remember to dress warm in the autumn and winter months. If you do forget, they have blankets for you. The Maori carvings ate excellent to look at. Learn more about their culture.

This was a really enjoyable trip to see the rock carvings. The sailing boat is beautiful and our captain was very entertaining as well as informative and she did her best to give us the full sailing experience in spite of there being very little wind. Included in the price is pizza and wine or beer, welcome as it was... More

Great guide and great tour! I was worried about missing the tour because it was raining that day, but our guide definitely made the most out of our trip. She was very knowledgeable and quite funny as well.

We were a group of friends who went on the sail to the Maori carvings. It was chilly and wet but we were given fleece lined ponchos, Some of us took to steering the sailboat and there were times that we felt like we were tipping, Our captain gave hot drinks to all and a souvenir postcard. Well worth the... More

Sail Barbary was a great experience - those warm ponchos were invaluable as the day we went out was raining but it didn't ruin anything - a great time was still had by all. Lovely to have the hot/cold drinks added, stunning rock carvings, entertaining sailor Sarah who had a story about everything. Super knowledgable and added comedy to our... More

Great boat, comfortable seating and some great views. We were unfortunate as we waited for late comers so set off later than planned and kinda lost all the daylight to see much but was still nice to sail under the stars. Captain was so chilled, bring your own booze and just hang out with friends. Pizzas provided from Pizza Hut!

Hi there, thanks for your review. You must have joined us on a Private Charter to have been out late at this time of year. We're sorry you felt like you lost the daylight, we only ever hold the boat a maximum of 5minutes if someone is running late for a genuine reason, so you wouldn't have lost that much... More

This is a great family experience. I did the adventure to the Maori carving with my uncle when I was 7yrs old, so it was great to share it with my 7yr old daughter and husband. We had a beautiful day and the staff are awesome. Thanks from the Fishers
