Great walk, much better than expected. Took about an hour but was (just) achievable with a 3 year old. Geothermal activity was better than than at Rotorua.

great place to have a walk and learn about the area. Good walkways and suitable for strollers. A good place to visit on a fine afternoon.

We loved Craters of the Moon. After several previous trips to the area, we had never visited this site, and are really glad we happened to drive past the signs and decided to check it out. For a small fee of only $8, you can wander around a boardwalk, with the round trip including a steep hill at the end taking around 45 minutes to one hour, depending on your pace. Craters of the Moon is filled with fascinating geological wonders, including mud pools and steam vents, including one very active steam vent towards the end which was roaring. Not commercialised at all unlike some of the Rotorua sites up to the road. Most definitely recommend.

A nice sunny day but the thermal activity a little underwhelming. Nice, clean and sturdy board walk. Good information along the walk.

Craters of the moon provides a really up close looks at the local Taupo geothermal activity. They have a variety of areas with both small and large collections of vents, including quite a significant vent which pours amazing amounts of sulphurous steam.
We spent well over an hour walking around the site and those that wanted to spend a little longer could make good use of the picnic tables provided.
A good fun time and great for families.

On a bleak winter's day, this was a fascinating experience. The valley is definitely surreal with steam coming out of the landscape everywhere. The fumaroles are amazing, and the unique flora a joy to behold.
Not sure it was really worth the extra hike to the lookout point, but hey, it was all good, and $8 a head is pocket money these days.
Go and enjoy!

My 11 year old daughter and I really enjoyed this walk and found it really informative. The walk is great for families and the top loop gives a great view. The big geyser is a must.

We were disappointed and underwhelmed on our visit to Craters of the Moon. There were quite a few tourists over Easter doing what we did, walk around the boardwalks for 45mins looking at a few pockets of steam. We went to Orakei Korako last year and although it’s more expensive and further out from Taupo it was well worth it, so much to see. I felt we paid $8.00 just to have a walk at craters of the moon, had it been more than that I would have felt ripped off.

We hadn’t been here for many years and were delighted to see that there was a shop at the entrance stocked with souvenirs. Very pleasant people gave us a map and explained the main features including safety. The $8 entrance fee is worth it.
A lookout building has info about the history and boardwalks along the entire journey make walking easy. We enjoyed seeing the thermal activity.
The toilet facilities are the best we’ve seen. Simply excellent.

Great way to experience the thermal activity in Taupo. The walk is a reasonably flat track 45 min walk with optional 15 min extension which is quite steep but offers great views. Lots of information signs about the history, geothermal activity and vegetation. Lots of great lookouts to areas with high activity.

If you have been to both Wai-O-Tapu Thermal wonderland and Craters of the Moon thermal park at Lake Taupo, what is the main difference please and would you still do both?

Hi
Just arrived back from 10 glorious days in Taupo.
Support the answers above both about Rotorua and Taupo as visited both.
Also suggest you take your bathers as public swimming is cheap, clean and lovely warm water.
Think Taupo will be cold in June so make sure u rug up.
I liked Taupo so much that I’m returning in July!
Enjoy Paradise

i've already made plans to visit Whakarewarewa Maori Village, which supposedly allows us views of geothermal features. so i'm wondering if i should still make time to drop by craters of the moon? will i be looking at the same things?

I found the craters of the moon to be a very unique experience. It is beautifully laid out for a leisurely stroll without any pressure or crowds. It is extremely well maintained and you are able to see the activity up close. I would go for it. Reasonable entry costs. Cheapest coffee going as well.

Hi Bronwyn. Having visited recently I think you must have been blind or were not walking where I was!!

I cannot imagine what you are talking about unless you cannot see? Whilst it may not be spectacular it is definitely worth a visit. The main geyser is induced and I think this only done once a day, but on the walk there is another small geyser which operates naturally and continuously.
I think you should remove your comment as it is 100% incorrect.
