Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Cannot miss seeing the lake when you visit Taupo. One of the best moments for me is seeing the sunset over the lake. It changes depending on the weather, but it is an extraordinary feature. There is a lovely walkway and cycle way beside the lake which gives you an excellent opportunity to enjoy the lake.

value for money- continuous tea/coffee and after Maori rock carvings a break for muffins. Right up close to carvings and good narrative. trip 1 -1/2 hrs.
Early trip down lake front with excellent commentary.

So much to do here. So much here. For a reasonably small place it has it all. We were impressed with all the eatery's. The walk and cycle path along the lake side is so nice and relaxing and a great way to take in the lake. Wish we had a boat to explore this hugh lake!

Definitely come to lake Taupo if you are visiting. It is worth a detour for. The lake is huge and there are plenty of wonderful spots around the lake with superb views. try to get some accomodation with a lake view. Mount Ruapehu is at one end - stunning on any day but especially beautiful on. a cloudless day. Visit the lake shore to find a piece of pumice. The lake is cold so be prepared if you fancy a swim.

An amazing view with amazing bays and beaches dotted around. There is a bike/walk around the lake with beautiful bays on the way. I would recommend this to anyone visiting Taupō or nearby areas for a fun family trip or people looking for beautiful views and a nice spot to bike/walk.

We stopped off here en route from Rotorua to Napier and enjoyed a couple of hours relaxing with a nice lunch to boot.
Taupo town is situated at the head of the beautiful lake of the same name. A giant crater formed following a volcanic eruption in the year CE180 and this is now the largest lake in New Zealand by size - Lake Te Anau is the largest by water volume.
We enjoyed a lovely stroll around this chic town and then it was onto our ultimate destination of Napier

Lake Taupo is a large crater lake located in the caldera of the Taupo Volcano - a super volcano.
Easy to overlook this, or even be aware, but I wouldn't want to live there. Good to see ... then move on.

Lake Taupō is said to be the largest, bluest, freshwater lake in New Zealand & the southern hemisphere. There are paths along the lake as well as a huge playground for the kids. You can find clean bathrooms at the park. There are plenty of shops and eating establishments. The McD was amazing as they used an old plane as their dining room. I didn't eat here but I thought the plane was pretty cool.

We were lucky enough to stay at a hotel on the shore of this beautiful lake. The views across the lake to snow-capped mountains are stunning. Close to our hotel thermal streams were feeding hot water into the lake which we found to be fascinating.

The views from the lakefront were beautiful and relaxing. There were no crowds at all in May and it felt like we had the place to ourselves. Of course our stop in Taupo only gave us a feel for a small section of this huge lake, the largest in New Zealand.
There was a lot of nearby street parking. The Coolest” McDonald’s and restaurants and cafes were less than five minutes from the shoreline and some had outdoor seating.
We did the obligatory family photo in front of the I Love Taupo sign and wandered through the Tongariro Domain.

As Lake Taupo is massive, is there a recommended/popular picturesque spot to enjoy the beauty of the lake?
Written 28 May 2017
There are plenty of spots, using google maps plot Taupo to Omori and you will find that it follows the lake and plenty of options for photos etc
The challenge you have is, to ensure you are close by to shops etc and for that Taupo township is great albeit a bit commercial
You could get a motel or hotel on the side of the lake which is on the right if you are driving south, also suggest go 2 kilometres south for accomodation
