About
Experience the beautifully restored garden and Chapman-Taylor home. Sculpted from a hillside overlooking the Waiwhakaiho River, this is a premier landscaped garden. Sense the prestige, lifestyle and stories of the property's original developer, the prominent businessman Sir Russell Matthews, and his family. Enjoy a game of tennis, make use of the free barbeque on the River Flat, find a quite spot to read a book or just appreciate the beauty of Tupare. Owned and managed by the Taranaki Regional Council on behalf of the people of the region. Enjoy it - it's yours.

Beautiful gardens
Jan 2021
Very peaceful location with lots of splendid plants. Unfortunately didn't get to go inside the house, though the history of the family was very interesting.

What a hidden oasis!

Beautiful garden and easily accessible. It amazes with every turn and detailed spaces.

Enjoyed the swing and the grass meadows. A must see in New Plymouth.

Gorgeous House and Gardens by the River
Dec 2020 • Family
One of the great spots to stop off at in New Plymouth. There’s a car park at the entrance for about 20-25 cars and you just take it easy and meander down through the various footpaths and walkways to the main house and eventually reaching the serene picnic area at the bottom. From there just grab a tranquil corner and switch your brain to relax.
Love the fact that there doesn’t seem to be many people here ever or even dogs to disturb the peace and quiet.

Thanks for your review and rating, Anthony. Tupare certainly is tranquil most of the time isn't it? A wonderful place to relax.

Well worth the walk down the winding path
Sep 2020
It seemed odd that the passion to create a detailed garden would select a steep hillside as their location but Tupare is a triumph of ingenuity.

Thanks for your review and rating Geoff. Yes, it does seems a strange site to choose but perhaps the young couple were looking at how much land they could get for their money. They certainly were successful in creating a beautiful garden, despite the slope, and the steepness adds to the garden's character.

Serenity and insight
Oct 2020 • Couples
We enjoyed the house tour and an insight of the family who created both their home and garden here. Both have been lovingly restored and are immaculately presented today without cost to the visitor. Very impressed with the tender loving care that made Tupare originally and those who attend to its maintenance today. We would be happy to visit again and recommend this little slice of history so well presented in New Plymouth .

Why "no dogs"?
Jul 2020
The gardens re lovely and the BBQ area by the river must be really good in Summer. I won't go again though because my dog isn't welcome. She is a member of the family and I hate this kiwi nonsense about having to leave a member of my family at home when I go out because she's not allowed to join in the fun.

Hi Trish, Thank you for your review and comments. We do understand the frustration of not being allowed to take your dog into Tupare. However allowing dogs comes with many issues, especially as not all dog owners abide by the rules. It is something that we review periodically as we understand that there are many visitors who would love to be able to bring their dogs. However we need to be sure that any change wouldn't negatively impact on the garden or the experience for other visitors and so far we haven't felt confident that would be the case.

Thank you very much for your review, Wayne. Yes, the Regional Council, on behalf of the people of Taranaki, also run Pukeiti and Hollard Gardens as well as Tupare, . All are free to visit and are open all day every day so we really encourage residents of Taranaki and visitors to make the most of all three fabulous gardens.

Beautiful formal garden
Jan 2020 • Couples
Beautiful formal “English-style” garden close to city. Walking through the gorgeous flowers in manicured pathways - a little steep in places but worth a slow meander! Even if main house is closed you can still see the architectural style in the Cottage. Well worth a visit.

Thanks very much for your review. Glad to hear you enjoyed beautiful Tupare. Yes, the free house tours are at 11am, Fri, Sat, Sun and Mon, from 1 October to 31 March. They also run more frequently during the garden festival in November. It is well worth scheduling your visit to coincide with these tours if you can as the house really is amazing.
