Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What a fantastic space. Really interesting and enjoyable. Great for all and kids will enjoy it too. And free to boot! It really is an asset to the local community.

We thought this an excellent museum. Spent about two hours here in the morning, then had 'to come up for air' by going for a stroll outside in the sunshine. We then came back for another hour after lunch. Really good sections on Natural History and Wildlife Conservation, Maori Taranaki, including the Maori wars, and on white settlement in Taranaki, which was of particular interest to me as I have forebears who arrived in New Plymouth in the 1860s.
They also have lockers (small fee for usage) that proved an excellent place to store our day-packs etc.

Imaginatively laid out, selectively curated artefacts, many quite rare, which paint a vivid picture of Taranaki's social history - Swandri, Fun Ho, surfing culture, Ronald Hugh Morrieson etc. What a pity the likes of scottk use the word "colonisation" as a pretext to shut down the story of southern English settlement in Taranaki - a heritage we Anglo-Celtic New Zealanders have every right to own.

Something about Puke Ariki didn’t sit right -then it hit me. The feeling of a celebration of colonisation. Besides all the usual NZ regional museum junk ( old washing machines, a 1905 scout masters uniform, hay bailers etc etc) and an attempt at some exhibition of Māori “ artefacts” this place has too strong a smell of colonisation about it. It’s not an attractive odour.

We spent a good 2 or 3 hours here and it was time well spent. This is a great regional museum. we even had a very pleasant late afternoon bite and drink in the adjoining restaurant.

Really interesting museum. I have been there twice. The exhibition on the upper level is the same (marine life, maori and a few other things). Detailed and with interactive activities for kids.
On the ground level the exhibition is changing. When I was there in September it was a photography contest with the winning photos.
Highly recommend to visit this museum.
