Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Wind Wand is a New Plymouth icon, designed by New Zealand artist Len Lye. It is located on the waterfront, directly across the street from Puke Ariki Museum and the i-SITE visitor center. It is easily accessed on the Coastal Walkway, where it can also be viewed from a considerable distance in both directions. Made of fiberglass and carbon fiber, the 48 metre structure is both strong and flexible enough to sway in the wind without breaking. The red light at the top is illuminated at night. According to the plaque at the base of the structure, it was made to celebrate the new millennium and the red light was illuminated for the first time on December 31, 1999. The Wind Wand is a landmark that is both whimsical and impressive, and it should not be missed.

Situated along the coastal walkway at 48 metres you can’t miss it.
The wand bends and sways in the wind and at night it lights up.
In 2017 it was struck by lightning.
An awesome sculpture.

New Plymouth is the home to Len Lye and his kinetic art. The wind wand is a particularly large and impressive example. It stands on the sea from waving, as the name suggests, in the wind. At night the globe at the top lights up and can be seen all over town.

Amazing views, with the waves crashing on the rocks - kids thought it great - nice walk around the waterfront

The Wind Wand is an iconic structure located on the Coastal Walkway in the centre of New Plymouth, it is a 45 metre tube made of red fibreglass. It was originally installed in 1999 but had to be repaired only weeks after installation and was re-installed in 2001. There are many sights to be seen in New Plymouth and the Wind Wand is one of the more unusual and probably one of the most visible.

Not sure why this is on here as a tourist attraction, it's a feature yes, it's unique to NP, but you wouldn't go out of your way to see it. It's a long curved mast which moves around with the wind. Oh and the top glows at night, probably to stop low flying aircraft from hitting it.

It was difficult to see what purpose (if any) was achieved by this installation which was little more than a bendy windsock.

Views are great, the walk way is really nice but the actual wind wand is overrated. Nice family day out

I know it's iconic but not sure what the fuss is...Good to see in person but wouldn't seek it out. Maybe we missed the point??
