Breath Deeply!
Jan 2019 • Couples
This is a site where a natural spring emitting a high output of sulfur smell is surrounded by a masonry wall where you can get close enough to clear out your sinuses from the fumes, if you care for that sort of bonus viewing opportunity. Soaking in these waters is thought to have medicinal value although you cannot do so at this site.

A great Rotorua sight!
Aug 2018 • Couples
We all went on a stroll around the lake and over to the blue baths and stopped off to look at the Rachel Springs. It’s a good opportunity for photos and with a stop, especially for tourists. The natural springs in Rotorua are amazing!

Photostop of geothermal activity in a public park
Feb 2018 • Couples
See the hot steaming waters of geothermal activity for free in the Governors Garden 24/7. Rachel Pool, a.k.a Whangapipiro, was easy to find, about 1 block away from the Polynesian Spa. Rachel Pool/Rachel Spring is in the open, close to the road in the park with parking areas nearby. Actually, there isn't much to see at this attraction, IMO. The 15 foot wide pool is surrounded by a circular 4 foot stone wall to discourage adventurous people from trying the waters. I would have thought the hot steam and the notice attached to the pool wall claiming that the water was 212 degrees F would be enough of a deterrent. The "still" water is aqua in color, but there is no boiling mud or geyser. Still it was a nice photo with the surrounding grey stone. The pool's depth was undetermined. There was little sulfur smell on the day we visited due to clear skies so fumes dissipated into the air. The attached sign also gave a clue to the name of the pool - a cosmetician named Rachel claimed youthful complexions resulted after applying the water's silica to faces. Of course, there was no opportunity to actually freely sample this quality of the mineral water at the pool, but various spas like the Polynesian Spa in the vicinity would be glad for your business. The water in this pool is piped into the Polynesian Spa.

Quick stopover for this unique attraction in Rotorua
Oct 2016 • Couples
We were coming from the northland area in NZ making our way into Rotorua as part of the Top Deck tour, and we stopped here for a toilet break, as well as for us to see this pool and get used to the smell. I liked it, very unique but could feel the heat and warmth of this pool. This would be the precursor to the Hell's Gate mud bath i went to a day later.

Maori people used the healing power of this spring water 700 years ago
Apr 2016 • Couples
Whangapipiro (Rachel Spring) is a historic alkaline hot spring in the Government Gardens. Its therapeutic water has a natural antiseptic action because of the sodium silica content and it's softening and relaxing skin effects. It was from this spring that the water was piped to the Bath House's private rooms directly. The water takes 100 years from fresh rainfall to percolate through the geothermal substrata rich in minerals.
The story with the healing power of the Rotorua geothermal waters began in 1878 when Father Mahoney, an Irish priest, was carried from Tauranga to this place suffering from painful arthritis. He returned home on foot, completely cured. It was then that people heard about Rotorua's miraculous healing waters and people started visiting the place, hoping for a quick pain relief.
There are also myths about the curative power of the Rachel Spring waters. According to a local one, if you swim in these waters, you'll have ageless beauty!!! But even if you don't, at least, I hope, youll have enjoyed the experience!
There are 2 Rachel Pools; the hotter one is at 40°C, while the other one is kept at 35°C allowing a longer bathing time.

Historic Hot Spring
Jan 2016 • Couples
Right next to Government Gardens is this historic bubbling hot spring (212 degrees F). It once served a spa in an adjacent building. Don't fall in!
