About
Mountain Jade is home to the most diverse collection of pounamu in New Zealand. In our Rotorua studio, join one of our daily tours to meet local artists and discover why pounamu, also known as greenstone or jade, is a unique New Zealand treasure. On our Highlights Tour, we will take you on an in-depth journey into the history of jade carving in Aotearoa, uncovering the significance of pounamu for Māori and exploring the traditional uses and values of the stone. You will immerse yourself in the sights, sounds and atmosphere of our carving studio, and you'll spend exclusive time with our artists, learning about the carving process and watching them work. Finally, you'll get to choose and string a piece of New Zealand pounamu, turning it into a necklace to treasure forever. The tour departs at 10 am, Monday – Friday and is $35 per person. Every day at 2 pm, you can join our free Educational Tour, where your guide will provide a 15-minute introduction to New Zealand jade carving.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great tour @ Mountain Jade - History of Jade / Greenstone / Pounamu gave us an understanding of where it comes - Family history of Mountain Jade and how it was started -Awesome tour watching the process of creating a Toki then picking a pounamu to make into a necklace at the end was so touching. Beautiful array of Pounamu from talented artists all on display and to purchase.

Great to see how the jewellery is made and hear about the stones. Makes it all have a lot more meaning. Making your own necklace which you can keep was a highlight. Inexpensive activity we would highly recommend.

A great visit leading to the acquisition of several pieces for friends. Friendly, unobtrusive advice. The only problem is the excessive choice! If you don’t find anything here you will never ever find it.

A taonga for my wife had been lost the day before, so time for a new one for her. We arrioved here on a sunday morning and were greeted immediately by wonderful service. The attendant gave us the time to look around and advised us of all the beautiful carvings around the store. She was so helpful in helping us understand the different taonga, and who they were carved by, even where they came from. We purchased a new Taonga for my wife and recieved another for our daughter. We will be back to purchase more for our family. Thank you again for having wondeful staff and great service.

Husband and I each wanted a peace of pounamu to remember our trip to Rotorua for wedding anniversary. Great service here - we’re talked through origins of pounamu, different types and treatments, meaning of carvings. Very happy with our purchases; can recommend this place. Thanks

What a story in a lovely place for a french couple.
After been advised by king people, I unfortunately lost my necklace and the stone the day after....
We send a Email to ask if it was possible to have a little sale because I really would to come back and buy a new one.
Somebody answered couple of minutes after and says.
We can offer you a new one, then I chose the nearest shop I was and she send directly an email to the shop to tell them.
With references, somebody brings back 3 different stones, same models with different colors tone to choose.
Very professional, kind and friendly .
Thanks all of you for everything.
I recommend them

Really nice that you can see craftsman working on pieces while you browse around. Make sure you speak to a member of staff as they are very knowledgeable about the different types of jade and what the different shapes mean (leaflet available). Also be careful, not all the jade in the store is from New Zealand as they also sell jade from China, Canada etc.
