Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

1. The inexperienced guy who served us didn't know which car park we should go to, and no knowledge of the mountain biking area- didn't know how long it takes to get to the lakes or what the routes were like.
2. Even the more experienced staff lady said we weren't allowed to use the "private" roads marked on the map (which is completely wrong- they were absolutely necessary to use)
3. On top of the 100 dollars for the day bike hire (2 bikes) they charged 5 dollars for a cheap paper copy of the trails map (which is posted all over the mountain on the boards at intersections)
4. We went on a Saturday and they closed at 4pm!!!! (Which they didn't tell us when we hired the bikes)
That's far too early in summer!
5. They don't give you the option to hire gloves for the day (i asked). I don't know about whether they provide other protective gear because they didn't talk to us to find out what we would like to do or give us any advice at all.
Positives
- the bikes were fine
- helmets included
- they were forgiving when we arrived late to drop off the bikes

My friend and i rented two bikes from this store. I have to say the service i received was just disgusting.
Renting the bikes was not a problem, the staff member was kind and helpful. Unfortunately my bike fell apart within the first our of us arriving at the forest. We were going up a hill and making our way to the lake. We did not once attempt to do any tricky tracks, we only wanted to do the nice wide, easy trails as one of us was injured.
The chain snapped on the hill and pulled the derailer into the wheels. I was thrown off the bike as it came to a halt. I was lucky i wasnt going fast. Two men kindly stopped and helped and tried to make the chain into a single speed bike in order to help us get home. They pointed out that there were multiple links in the chain that were loose and this would probably come apart, which it did. We had to talk our bikes for an hour on the flat before we came across the kind men that helped us. They picked us up and drove us to the cycle store. We in total, spent an hour cycling, and 2 and half trying to fix the bike and get back to rotorua.
Upon arriving in the store, two of the staff member were perfectly polite and pleasant. The third member who appeared to be in charge was disgustingly rude, I believe he is called Dave. He accused us of lying. Told us he could walk back from the forest in an hour so it wast much of a big deal, and it couldn't have taken us two hours to sort this out.
He said this only happens from doing extreme things and falling off the bike. I was told that this bike was brand new and never been taken out before. Beside the point the chain was clearly not brand new, very frayed and links were not useable, the bike, new or not, was not fit for purpose. We had several people who saw us struggling on the main path. We road bike and we used the gears properly.
I asked for a refund and he told me that he wasn't going to charge me for my bike.
He eventually gave me half my money back.
There is a case to be said for good communication and common courtesy, rather than being rude, obnoxious and intimidating. If owned a business and found out that he spoke to any customer like that i would be horrified. He seemed very proud of the way he handled the situation, stating he was being fair. If he did not want to give me a refund that is something i can accept, but not his treatment of people.

We wanted a leisurely cycle around part of lake Rotorua to go exploring and came across Rotorua Cycle Center. They are mainly a bike retailer, but they also hire bikes. The shop is easy to get to and plenty of parking outside the shop.
We hired a couple of the Giant Talon 2 mountain bikes at what I thought was a very reasonable price $35 per bike for half a day or $50 for the day. Helmets were provided.
The bikes looked reasonably new and we encountered no problems at all.
Friendly service and good quality bikes. Would recommended.
