If you can get a ride - the small drive out to rainbow mountain is a great afternoon out with sweet scenery and a decent hike up a steep little mountain ! great combo with the local free hotpools nearby

This is the most beautiful crater lake I have ever seen, It has sky blue water with bush surrounds. Apparantly you can swim in it, unfortunately we were doing the bike trail, so were not equipped, but next time definitely.

Not for the faint hearted, its starts off pretty easy but soon ramps up to steep sections with difficult footings. However, it is well worth the trek and time as when you reach the top it gives you a fantastic view of the surrounding countryside,...More

Takes about an hour to get to the top, best not tackled in wet weather, as it can be slippy. Some sections are fairly steep. Great views from the top.

All sorts of cool geology are free around Rotorua so don't go for the expensive place. The forest was very interesting as were the pools.

Uphill and a bit rough in places but not a difficult walk, shared uphill by mountain bikers. Best not to go off track too much as still active steam vents on the mineral cliff area, which is the origin of the location name. The trees...More

You need to be fairly fit to do this walk. While it's not long it is very steep and the track is rough in places. Lots of good spots on the way up to 'look at the view' and catch your breath back before continuing....More
