We started the walk from the Lake Front which added a fair distance before we reached the geotherml area. It is a pleasant enough walk along the lake side, round Hatupatu Drive car park at the point, but it does at least a half hour extra. As a result we stopped the walk just in front of the Sudima Lake Rotorua Hotel. I believe the walk continues to the Puarenga Stream.
It would be better to park along Hatupatu Drive and start closer to Sulphur Point. The path is clear and it is an easy level walk. It is an interesting and different geothermal area to explore. Free!

Nice walk with a lot to see, including bird life, bubbling pools, steaming vents and of course the colourful bay. You can extend the walk by doing the lake front walk way which begins behind the Rotorua Museum. Make sure children wear shoes as there seemed to be a lot of old glass scattered on some sections of this walk. If you're interested in geothermal/volcanic activity then I would also recommend Kuirau Park, which is also free and well worth checking out.

Pleasant walk around the waterfront from the museum building to Sulphur Point. Beware of the biting insects though! You can also drive around to the car park on the point, where you can sit and watch the lake.

Sulphur Point is an interesting place to visit and have a walk along the pathways. Good views over the lake from the end carpark. Lots of bird life in protected area.
Sadly it can sometimes have a lot of people who can look dubious and make you feel a little uncomfortable at times. I wouldn't recommend walking the paths on your own any longer. Some homeless and other people seem to hang around there.
Still worth the visit to see views over the lake.

After the drive up for Wellington, we were well and truly ready to stretch our legs and get in a few steps. We wandered from our hotel into the Rotorua CBD which sadly has been severely impacted by Covid-19. We wandered down through the Government Gardens and then on down to Sulphur Point and further. You forget the stench that is Rotorua between visits!

Sulphur Point is a geothermal area on the shores of Lake Rotorua boasting a number of mud pools. Fascinating geothermal area.

Rotorua has become somewhat over-touristy in recent years, with many places charging a lot to see natural features. But for the sake of a little drive/walk behind the Events Centre, you can find sulphur, steam, fumaroles and beautiful coloured water in the lake, as well as many different birds to watch.
A good place to get away from the crowds and enjoy the quirks of nature in this fascinating area.

Nice easy walk with loads of bird life. Learned a bit about stuff I thought I knew which is always good. Unfortunately the museum was closed, would be a good combo. Free stuff is not too common in Rotorua so make the most of it!

It was a nice walk around the point, it was a wet day when we did it and the boardwalks parts were a bit treacherous. But we still managed lol. Interesting to see that a lot of redevelopment work is happening closer to Rotorua which will transform the area and make it really nice. A nice walk with children as it’s flat and best of all for Rotorua it is free.
