Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It's a nice walk, relatively easy, but also a little uphill now and then and some pretty steep stairs. Beautiful nature, mainly dense rainforest, and a rare glimpse of the water. We started at the parking lot on the north side by the beach area/camping area and turned right. There is a lot of activity with speedboats, jet skis, family outings, young people with music, etc. So, unfortunately, you cannot expect a quiet trip with peace in nature.
On the south side is also a parking lot with a small beach.

Nice walk around the blue lake which takes about 1:5 hours along a well signposted track. Much of it is very enjoyable - slightly up and down skirting the edge of the lake - but the final quarter is along the edge of the road which is less enjoyable. Grab a coffee at the campsite reception if you wish and there are toilets at either end of the walk (by the blue lake and green lake viewpoint car park).

The circular walk around Lake Tikitapu takes an hour or more depending obviously on speed; reasonably easy walk partially on footpath, but mostly through native bush.
Parking is either near the beach, where there are toilets and usually a cafe truck serving excellent international snacks, or on the lookout point between the Green and Blue Lakes (a little further around due clockwise from the beach); recommend the former.
Pristine native bush and lots of birdlife including the ubiquitous tui, kereru (native pigeon) and piwakawaka (fantail), but look out also for whitehead and especially their nemesis, the koekoea (long tailed cuckoo) a rare summer migrant to New Zealand, which I heard, then saw for the first time during this walk.
A dip in the lake to follow the walk is perfection.

Ordinary but nice. The walk around the Blue Lake is a nice gentle piece of exercise while on holiday and if we lived here we would probably walk (a couple of circuits at a time) from time to time. There is little or no evidence of bird life and there are few good views of the lake. The bush does smell good though. Having been so insipid so far I must add I find the Blue lake water and beach environment just fabulous. We have spent days lounging on the beach and swimming round the buoys and can highly recommend to anyone who enjoys warm clear lake water.

My goodness this place, and Green lake are special. The walking track around this lake is so fun. It started to rain and we just ducked under the trees and were kept warm. I love the fact that they have one area that you can see both lakes. Green Lake is a sacred lake and they just do so much with the beautiful nature that they have around there.

An easy walk on a well maintained track with beautiful scenery. I found the continuous noise of many jetskis to significantly detract from the experience. There was little if any bird song, maybe the bird life had gone to find a quieter more peaceful location.

Blue Lake is always a must stop if your a local, newbie or just want a dip in the water.
Blue Lake is said to have healing powers, locals come and swim in the lake to heal skin conditions, muscle tightness etc.
Other than the crystal clear waters the scenery around the lake is picturesque.

Great Lake walk. My wife and I walked with our 2yo daughter. She wasn’t able to walk the whole way but I had our backpack and carried her for some if the way. It took us about 2hrs with stops for snacks and ‘toddler pace’ walking. Our total walk time was 1.5hrs. We had a n enjoyable lunch by the lake from the Airstream cafe with coffee and chicken nuggets and chips. The coffee was also very good

Make sure you walk aroiund the track enough to at least get to the viewpoint to see both blue and green lake at the same time. It is very easy, flat and some nice views of the lake. A nice 2 hour leisurely stroll if you want. The lake also has some nice beaches for swimming if you want as well

The path goes all the way around the lake, and takes almost an hour. It is not strenuous, but it is not all flat either. The lake is pretty, tho best viewed for its blueness from the green lake/blue lake lookout. The rainforest is very itneresting, full of odd ferns and huge trees. Ice cream near the dock. All good.

Hi,
Can you please give me some more details re the lookout.
We are hiring a car from Tauranga to Wai o tapu for the day.
Is this within range?
We would also like to see the Redwoods.
Thanks

What would be the cheapest way to get there by public transport etc? Or a cheap tour? :)
Written 4 April 2015
Can't add to these, I'm afraid. The Rototua Duck is probably your best option if you don't want to hire a car.
