About
Rotorua has a unique wine experience in its tourism repertoire with Volcanic Hills Winery. The winery where we make the wine is at the base of Skyline Rotorua, however you will need to take the Skyline Gondola up to the Volcanic Hills Tasting Room. Currently open daily from noon (closed Good Friday and Easter Sunday). Do arrive at the gondola terminal an hour before closing to ensure you have time to enjoy the Gondola ride and your tasting before we close. Come up and drink the view overlooking Lake Rotorua. Please note we are closed Christmas Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday each year. We open at 1pm on 25th April each year.

The view, the wines and Larissa were amazing. The ride up on the gondola and lake view felt like you were in another world. Our guide Larissa took time to learn our preferences and teach us more about the NZ wines and their regions. She could discern our palate to help us try something different too. Very enjoyable and learned so much. The knowledge will stick with you the rest of your time on the north island and also when you go back to the states to help make different and rewarding wine selections. Wish I had allotted more time here.

If you’re ever considering the skyline gondolas, make sure to call in to the Volcanic Hills Wine tasting room. An amazing experience all-round with super friendly and knowledgeable staff! Special shoutout to Carmen who went above and beyond to ensure we enjoyed ourselves while sharing her passion and love of all things wine! A definite must!

The two girls working here, Carmen and Paige are two of the nicest people I’ve ever met. They’re so kind and knowledgable. I did the wine tasting (which is very affordable). I was there for over an hour and a half and saw them interact with each person who came in with the same enthusiasm, kindness and joy.
They are true ambassadors for the brand. They have so much knowledge on the wines and a passion for the history.
I was debating doing the Skyline Gondala as I didn’t have any interest in doing the buggy’s at the top of the swing but I am so glad that I did go and that I found the wine tasting :)

This place is so great! The view is super pretty and the staff is friendly. Paige was very knowledgeable about the wines and was so fun to talk to. Thank you for being so warm and welcoming! The wine tasting was delicious!

Great experience with a fantastic view. Must say it was the first time I ever took a gondola ride to get to a winery. Everything about the day was great fun. We ordered a cheese board to accompany our tasting. Not a huge fan of the wines, but it was still definitely an experience I wont forget because it was so delightful.

What a delightful setting. Beautiful wines and sensational tasting provided by very friendly staff. While the younger family enjoyed the luge we enjoyed the tasting experience provided by Volcanic Hills! Five terrific wines. Sav Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah. All beautiful wines - my favourite was the Syrah! Classic wine!

If you are in Rotorua and want to have a fun afternoon then make sure you visit Volcanic Hills Winery. Beautiful view, really delicious wines, and wonderful staff and owner to lead you thru the tastings. We just returned from 2 months in NZ and Australia and I have to say this is one quality winery. Hard to believe because it is not really located in a wine area of NZ but the owner/wine maker REALLY knows what he is doing!! On top of it all he is a delight to discuss wines and has a LOT of great information. Excellent lineup of wines he can put up against any wines in NZ....I am telling you these are some really good wines!! Don't miss this opportunity to try some really nice wines in a beautiful overlook of Rotorua.

Our wine tasting was just lovely! My husband and I got a three wine tasting each and it was the perfect size. The views were really lovely. I came on here specifically to say what a joy our sommelier Paige was! Lovely bubbly personality, took interest in our trip and gave us very memorable descriptions of each wine, with anecdotes, points of interest etc! We left with a lovely Volcanic hills pinot noir which we plan to have on Christmas Day! Thanks team - will recommend!

Can you get a bus from Rotorua to Volcanic Hills winery or is it reasonable to get a taxi?

Hi. Sorry to take so long to answer! We are situated at Skyline so are on the No1 bus route - I can't post the link to the bus timetable but google Rotorua buses and baybus will pop up.
Depending on where you will be staying it will be approx $20 from the city centre according to one taxi firm I called.
