Incredible, authentic forest trail only defined by wear as opposed to commercially laid pathways. We only have over an hour to bike so did the so-called kids trail twice! So much FUN! I wonder how adventurous the “adult trails” might be after that experience. Bike and tyre quality is high so whilst you are dropping down hill parts and biking over big branches, rocks and debris at speed, you are still safe :). Great value too for $39.00 for 2-hours. We rented bikes from Mountain Bike Rotorua from their outlet at the Te Putake O Tawa carpark and rode the Whakarewarewa Forest Loop track. Bikes were very good and the ride was fantastic. We have done many other Great Rides of NZ, and they have all been great. But this was the first that provided a full mountain bike experience rather than trail on a cycle path. The trail runs through forest most of the way and weaves its way through the trees with ups and down and switchbacks to keep you focused. Riding through the forest was always beautiful and peaceful and there were some great views from several vantage points, particularly of the Green Lake and also the panoramas over Rotorua. Thoroughly enjoyable. Just be aware that the facilities at the Tawa site are quite limited, particularly in the off season, with the bike shop and cafe only open Friday through Sunday, and with a limited number and selection of bikes. This location is newly developed and potentially an excellent alternative to the Waipa Mill site. Hopefully as its popularity increases, the services available will too.…
