The museum is currently closed but there is plenty to see around the gardens. It's a nice place for a pleasant stroll, and the Rachel Spring Whangapipiro is an interesting hot spring to check out (from a safe distance).

Sad sad sad to see the buildings so forlorn! It seems to have turned into one big construction site in this area.
We remember the museum well from previous visits & hope it will be restored back to its former glory soon.

This is just a lovely peaceful interlude to your day. The museum is onsite but closed until 2025 for renovations. That doesn’t matter though, it’s a nice place to picnic or stroll for an hour and relieve stress. The Polynesia Spa adjoins the gardens and there are some geothermal mud pools at two places. One is close to the Polynesian Spa, but the others are sort of at the very back of the gardens (go beyond the museum and events centre). They are a few minutes walk from the centre of town and there is a children’s play park with swings etc. very pleasant to walk around for 60 - 90 minutes or so.

On a sunny day it is a very pleasant walk around the Government Gardens in Rotorua. The museum is an impressive centrepoint of the gardens - a pity the buildings is going to be closed for years for earthquake strengthening. Behind the museum you can continue your walk around the lake edge to Sulphur Point.

Always a pleasure when in Rotorua to spend a few minutes wandering around this area. Some interesting buildings, nice plantings and a pleasant fish pond. On a warm, sunny day a real joy.

Not what I had expected. The art around is very disappointing. Was expecting carvings and some impressive statues and Maori works to be in the gardens. The art was weird and really didnt mean anything except the ghost soldier.

Lovely area to wander around on a good day. The gardens are well kept and lead down to the lake and Sulphur Point.

Beautiful Government Gardens is a public park, located beside Lake Rotorua. It is a major tourist attraction.

Great Maori sculptures/carvings, interestingly-engineered gates, olde worlde style building very picturesque, well looked after gardens & pond. Well worth a stroll.
