Interesting Maori art and making of it in depth. Experience the Maori arts and crafts which is surrounded by beautiful traditional sculptures and crafted wooden buildings.

Learned a lot
Dec 2019
Being a sculptur myself I was very interesting in the Maori art and the making of it. The institute shows you in depth the way the art is being made. Many is for sale. We talked to various artists and I even started making my own Maori art.

We had a great time, it was an awesome visit!
Dec 2019 • Family
My 14 year old daughter, Helena, and I went to New Zealand for a fortnight and visiting Rotorua was one of the highlights of the trip! There was a Maori dance (haka) show and we got to taste good made on special ovens, it was all a wonderful experience. I know for a fact that I want to go back to Rotorua and so does my daughter

Beautiful! Worth the visit!
Dec 2019
Visited in December 2019. Wonderfully-presented show we could watch again and again! Outstanding singers and performance. Arts and crafts were interesting. Carvings were amazing. What artists the Maori are! A Beautiful culture we'd love to live with but can't! Would love to attend again on a future trip! Opens up history and culture we were never aware of!

maori village
Jan 2020
A little touristy but worth a visit. The cultural school workshop was very good. There’s also trails to see mud ponds and even a geyser. Lots of carvings all around.

Interesting to see Maori crafts adapting to modern materials

Great opportunity to see real craftsmen (and the odd woman) at work, learning their cultural skills. You can watch them at work, and ask questions.

Smorgasbord at te patata restaurant
Jan 2020
We had lunch at Te Pataka Restaurant. Smorgasbord, food well presented, with lovely cultural touches to the food.
Atmosphere is not formal, with an emphasis on group catering. We sat at a large table with other people.
It probably would be a good idea to book, and to arrive earlier in the setting than we did, as some food ran out and was not replaced. We spoke to management, who thanked us for input. We would eat here again (and book)

A blast from the past
Mar 2019
I have memories of being here when I was a teen - several decades ago - mostly of the traditional song and dance performance. The buffet dinner was spectacular and definitely the best meal we had the entire trip. The geyser even cooperated while we were there, although it would have been more fun to see it during the day. What I remember before about Rotorua was the sulfur smell - just like Yellowstone except you couldn't get away from it. I didn't experience that this time. My husband felt like the program at the center was more like visiting an Indian reservation and watching the Native Americans perform, and he didn't like that aspect. It's definitely a touristy attraction.

Māori Culture
Nov 2019 • Friends
The Māori Arts and Crafts Institute at Rotorua is a must see attraction. Very well laid out the campus displays various Māori carvings in wood in totem pole fashion and also showcases Arts and Craft training in progress. The guide not only briefs you about the Māori history and heritage but also takes you on a guided tour around the geothermal activities around the institutes. The tour passes through the hot mud beds, the geyser terraces and the like. A very memorable experience...
