About
Paradise Valley Springs is open every day of the year, including all public holidays, from 8.00am until dark with last ticket sales at 5.00pm. Lion Feeding is every day at 2.30pm and our Kea and Possum Feeding happens every day at 3.00pm. The park is set in a beautiful native bush covered setting, and has excellent wide walkways throughout that are well suited for strollers and wheelchairs. We have bags of Trout or Animal Food available for $2 per bag if they would like to hand-feed some of the animals, or throw food to the trout. Your time in Paradise will include getting up close and personal with our New Zealand Birds, Trout and Wildlife. We also have our Rainforest Treetops Walkway hidden six metres high amongst mature native trees and bush. You will also be able to view our Lion Pride in their enclosure at any time of the day.

Loved watching the lion feeding! The zookeeper was friendly and knew so much and could answer so many of our questions about lion caretaking. We have been to many zoos around the world and have never been so close to real lions. The rest of the park is also beautiful and feeding the other animals was so fun. Gorgeous flora everywhere. This zoo is probably one of the best we’ve been to and is truly paradise.

such a lovely clean well maintained facility. we arrived at 1.30pm and had plenty of time to wander throughout the pens of various animals, getting up close to Llama, pigs, donkeys, ducks etc. Fed the wild rainbow trout, and got conned by a goat for the rest of the snacks you can buy at the shop for them. We enjoyed the informative talk about the lions at the feeding display at 2.30pm. there are plenty of vantage points to view the lions leaping for their meal. A good experience and apart from only one set of stairs for the treewalk portion, which you can leave out, very accessible for those less mobile.

Animals you can pat & feed out of your hand, and animals you want to admire from a distance... Lions, Trout, Ducks, Goats, Pigs, sheep, Emu, etc.. along with lovely nature walks. Fun for the whole family to enjoy. We took a picnic which we enjoyed on the grass while watching the animals. We went on mothers day & mothers got in free! Overall Great experience.
Note: No cell reception onsite

Absolutely loved this place. We have been to lots of wildlife centres around NZ as a young family, and I have to say this one was really memorable. The walkways and general layout was beautifully done and we loved how we weaved around and over the gorgeous stream and fed the trout. (Spending the extra few dollars on the trout and animal food packets is highly recommended!). The treetop section was splendid, as was the little cave (manmade) that allowed underwater viewing. The lions were cool, but honestly I thought just walking around this place was magic.

We visited with our 3 year old grand daughter and spent nearly three hours here. She loved every minute of it. The park is very well laid out and beautifully maintained with interactions with wildlife all around. All the animals had plenty of space to roam and we were able to feed them with the purchased pellets. It was amazing seeing the wild trout in the stream running through the park along with the several large trout pools and underwater viewing. The bush setting was beautiful. The lions and cubs very pretty special but all the other ordinary animals and birds were just great too. Our grand daughter loved all the different stations you could listen to various bird/animal calls. Definitely recommend and I know we will be back again.

TL;DR. Incredible for families with kids, great little experience for couples.

Was a great time being able to interact and pet the lion Cubs, something I’d recommend to anyone who hasn’t already done something similar.
The Lion Pride feeding was awesome aswell, the American gentleman who fed them the day we were there was kind, funny and approachable, and answered all the questions we had to ask.
The rest of the park was a nice calm walk, with no hand holding, it’s free roam. There were ducks scattered around the park so if you’re scared of birds like my fiancé, be wary, haha.
There were some deer, turkeys, sleep, goats, pigs and some alpacas to feed as you walk about at your owl leisure which was good fun.
Incredible place to bring kids, and a niche little adventure for a couple.

Okay - if you have read the other reviews, there are plenty of them here that let you know that this facility engages in potentially unethical treatment of animals. However, if you are just looking for a once in a lifetime experience. Then you have to go and go now because eventually the "animal lovers" will win and this place will be shut down and you will never have an opportunity to have experienced the activities that they offer unless you are just exceptionally wealthy.

For the inexpensive entry fee of $35 - they allow you to pet a lion cub. Arrive early at opening and get it done if you ever want to do it at all. Yes - you may have to queue/wait but this is a truly unique experience - a bucket list item that allows you to connect with nature and a majestic creature that you can only dream about. I felt a tinge of guilt supporting this park but have chosen to remind myself that the only reason it is controversial is because of the price and that they are enabling anyone to pet a lion cub. It is an incredible experience that they are offering and they are doing the absolute best that they can to promote the love of animals.

Keep in mind that the lion cubs are wild animals so please behave sensibly (i.e. do not let your child approach one). To keep this event affordable, they only have one handler for the lion cub at any given moment and the handler has to manage a large crowd of visitors plus a wild animal. It is easy for the handler to be distracted because inevitably someone will talk to her. Do not touch the lion cub unless you have the handler's complete attention on you and the lion cub. We saw a child chase a cub into a corner and it bit her (nothing more serious than a dog bite/nip) but as a parent you must control your child. Listen to the handlers and pay attention to their lead. They will cue you and let you know when it is safe to do anything.

The "animal lovers" would not be fussing if they charged $3,500 for you to pet the lion cubs, which I can foresee them doing in the near future just to stop the complaints. The only difference being that only the exceptionally wealthy can afford to do it and most average people will not. But of course, like all activities there are going to be some that do and do not suit you (i.e. if you get seasick easily then boat trips are no-nos), then there are plenty of wonderful alternate activities in fantastic Rotorua.

Okay - now that we have dealt with the potentially unethical portions of the park, I will talk a little about the portions that are less controversial. The park is very well maintained and the animals seem to be very well cared for. They have heaps of trout (which if you're a city dweller as I am) are really fun to see in the water. They also have heaps of farm animals in beautiful enclosures. They sell food at the entrance for a few dollars so it's definitely worth buying some because the animals love it.

They also have natural spring which you must visit! I have never intentionally drank water from an unchlorinated source or plastic vessel in my life. So it was definitely another unique experience. The natural spring is near a beautiful treetop walk that really makes you feel at one with nature. Which I believe is really the purpose of this park, to help you feel that connection to other living plants and animals.

Thank you very much for your review. We try to ensure the patting of our Cubs can be available to anyone who would like to do it while keeping our Cubs best interests in mind. We believe it is a very special experience which heightens people's appreciation and awareness of these amazing animals and their current situation in the wild. We are glad you enjoyed your overall experience and appreciate your recommendation for others to do so! We hope you will decide to visit again!
