Te Pā Tū
About
Feast on song, drama, tradition, and divine seasonal kai (cuisine) within our forest Pā (village) blanketed by towering Tawa trees, its blazing bonfires, and forest-formed amphitheatre. Te Pā Tū offers 4-hour evening events that change with each season of the maramataka, the Māori lunar calendar. During summer, Tū Te Rā celebrates harvest, and explore concepts in ancient Māori warfare and peace. Across winter, Tū Te Ihi celebrates the Matariki star cluster, a new lunar year, the promise they herald. Cultural knowledge unique to each season is shared through rituals, songs, stories across the event as is local, seasonal kai - plentiful and delicious. Kai horotai (indigenous canapes) are followed by a torch lit walk to a lavish 3-course fusion feast. Our famous traditional hāngi shares the table with other seasonal delicacies prepared with Māori and global techniques but all drawing inspiration from Māori flavours, healing properties, history, heroes.

We enjoyed this experience - especially the passion of the young people who were showing us the Māori customs and doing all the dancing and singing.

The visit to the Māori village as the sun went dish was very atmospheric and gave you an insights as to what life must have been like back in the day.

The hangi feast meal was also good with reasonably priced drinks. The evening also included being picked up and dropped off at our hotel which meant we could all enjoy a drink!

A very enjoyable evening!

We went to this experience not really knowing what to expect, having been recommended this by friends who chose not to give anything away. Our expectations were high, however we could not have predicted the overwhelming roller-coaster of emotion that was felt throughout this incredible experience. The whanau welcomed us in and imparted fascinating knowledge of traditional Maori life, the care and skill that went into each and every task by every member of the family was wonderful. We will never forgot the emotion shown through the song, dance and performance of the entire family. The standing ovation at the end was testament to the wonderful incite provided into the maori culture. The food was incredible, and beyond what we expected, the fusion of different cuisines shone through, and the hangi was beautifully cooked. I cannot recommend this experience highly enough.

We were picked up from Rotorua and driven to the Maori Te Pa Tu event. It started with a Maori Ritual to establish if the visitors were friend or foe. We then had a short walk through a wooded area where at each stop we had special canapes and joined in the Maori games and activities. This was followed by several more stops to learn more about the Maori way of life, plants that are used for healing, and more. We were then entertained in a theatre with rousing Maori singing, dancing and actions. Finally a tasty and plentiful dinner with visitors from all over the world. We were then driven back to Rotorua. We would certainly recommend going to this event.

My colleagues and I were blown away! We are Rotorua locals and hadn't been to Te Pa Tu since it changed ownership and programmes. We were completely impressed with everything, and it was all seamless. Every single staff member, from our hosts/guides to the entertainers to the team in the whare kai (dining room), looked pleased to be there and took pride in their work to educate and look after us. The food, which is inspired by dishes around the world, plus traditional Maori hangi (food cooked in an earth oven). The canapes offered four times during the tour showcased traditional, indigenous foods such as kawakawa, fry bread, seafood, and more. It was all delicious. I definitely recommend this activity and will recommend it to my visitors.

This attraction has changed hands since the positive reviews. Very disappointed. We were expecting to learn more about the culture and to experience traditional foods. The people doing the show, and show is what it was, were lovely but this is not enough. There were 2 coach loads of people served in a dinning room. Scotch eggs and curried chicken is not traditional. The reason given for serving this non traditional food was that the chiefs were from different countries.
The cultural experience was poor too, games join in is not what we had in mind. There was a suggestion that we would learn about the use of herbs to heal , there were two small plants on show, one was not even grown.
I truly wanted to learn about the rich culture and I think what we experienced belittled us and the Māori people.

This is the best evening you'll have in New Zealand. It has everything. We learned about Maori history, customs, games. There were opportunities to participate in games and the Haka - a traditional dance. There is a performance with native songs followed by dinner. This has something for all ages & all interests. Learn & have fun at the same time.
