Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Our family spent the morning with Merv. He was great at instructing those of us who were beginners and we were able to have a fun, pretty and interesting ride through the woods and paths near Rotorura.

Great trip, thanks Merv!

Had a great 1/2 day tour. We were picked up at out motel and taken to a dirt track. Reasonably quiet so we're able to get our bearings. I was a novice and Merv to great care in insuring that I was fully up to speed before tackling the tracks. I did have a few falls but this wasn't an issue as by the end I felt pretty comfortable on the bike. Merv was very personable and had over 30 years experience so you felt very comfortable with hi,. Thanks for a great days adventure. I would definitely recommend for people with a sense of adventure.

Had a great ride with Merv (Owner) who not only hooked me up with the perfect size bike for my riding level and size (his one of a few Honda CRF 230's, perfect for my 178cm height 77kg weight as I am a novice rider), I also got a spectacular ride deep into the hills of Rotorua. Hit a few fresh cow pies but that was nothing compared to the perfect post-rain conditions with just enough moisture to keep the dust down and the mud to a minimum. Merv was careful to stay at my pace but also pushing me just enough to better my riding technique. He was very attentive to me and gave me some great riding tips for when I get back to California. He is very easy going but with his 30 years of riding experience I knew I would be ok and learning from the best. If you are a seasoned rider on vaca with an itch to twist some grips or a newby week end warrior like me you've got to hit up Pure Dirt Tours NZ! Thanks again Merv!

This was my first time on a bike and Merv was the best teacher - extremely patient and after a few tumbles had me riding with confidence. I was lucky enough to pick a really beautiful morning to do this and was treated to the best views over Rotorua and even to Mt Tarawera! I highly recommend this activity, it's so much fun and suitable for almost anyone. I went skydiving a couple of weeks ago and speeding through the paddocks with those beautiful views was right up there with that! Thanks again Merv :)

My 14 year old son and I took a 2 hour ride with Merv during our vacation. All I can say is that it was fantastic. My son hasn’t ridden before and Merv took great care to show him how to ride and navigate the trails. He was very patient!! Couldn’t recommend this enough for families willing to try something different.

Starting the day off inexperienced in Dirt Biking, and with the rain creating muddy trails and tracks, this combination suggested we could be in for a long day. However, Merv (tour guide) was very helpful and cheerful in teaching and directing us throughout the day. Quickly grasping the skills we toured over many hills and trails with great fun. Definitely recommended.

My boyfriend has rode dirt bikes since he was a kid and thought it would be a fun way to experience the beautiful New Zealand countryside. He even called the day before and asked about the tour offered. The guide assured him it would be to his advanced riding level and that all gear would be provided. What a let down. My boyfriend said the gear wasn't up to date and the guide didn't have protective knee pads available. There was no set area to ride in and the pace was entirely too slow. The guide didn't even give him a discount for the disappointing ride. $200 plus. Would not recommend.

Hi Slonkie, Sorry for your disappointing experience with Pure Dirt. Our current ride area is not suitable for advanced riders so when he arrived I suggested to take him to another ride area and he said that he didn't have time, But he was still keen to ride the tracks we had. If he had mentioned that he was not happy the guide could have sorted it out on the day. Regards Merv

While in NZ I really wanted to do something similar to a tour in buggies or something along those lines and when I found out about dirt biking tours I thought this would be perfect. I have only been riding for a year but also never done anything off road so was apprehensive. Matt was our tour guide and was really helpful and friendly from the start. He showed us the basics of riding dirt and then led us on our way. He was really good at pushing us to a point where it wasn't too much for us but still a challenge and fun. We saw some good sights and rode some decent trails. I came off the bike a good amount of times but only tended to be at low speed and the bikes are pretty tough. Didn't even have a scratch on me. All in all an amazing place to go. Highly recommended.

Went out with Merv for a 2 hour ride. At first I was thinking it would be short but I can say it was plenty!! Merv help me with a quick session around the training track so, as a total newbie, I had a bit of technique. We then went up the moutnain and rode on some pretty steep terrain and tehn in a thick forest. We finally arrived on top of the mountain to amazing view of the regions, seeing all the way to the sea and White Island; exhilirating! Love it; riding through the New Zealand Forest and the furns was truly an exceptional adventure and can't wait to go again! Merv and his team were excellent counsel
