Wonderful history here
Apr 2019 • Couples
Spent the afternoon learning about the local culture. Walked the grounds, saw a dance demonstration, had a delicious lunch onsite. The history and culture is very interesting and well worth the admission price. Plan to spend 2-4 hours to fully enjoy all that this place has to offer.

Horrible

Incredibly beautiful community with an enriching history and dedication to its ancestry.

BUT. DO NOT TAKE A TOUR!!!
We had the opportunity to have a tour of the grounds. It was amazing....but towards the end- the guide went on a strange rant about his hatred for Western Culture. He told us he was a shaman (which I respect) but then continued to tell us that our way of life was wrong, our ancestors were wrong. Our “grandparents were liars”. Then he went on a rant about cancer....chemo doesn’t cure it, only plants do—all of our diseases in the “western world” are deserved. Then he told us mental illness isn’t real. Even if you agree with him, it’s not the place to be ridiculed, talked down to and judged. He was extremely condescending.

It was strange. If we had asked how he felt about it, I could MAYBE understand the rant- but it was so odd, strange and totally made us feel judged and “unworthy” of us even entering his community.

Let’s just say, go to a more touristy place to learn about the culture. I had a $50 prepared to donate but swiftly put it away once that man went on his 15 minute long rant. Visit quickly and go to another place for a show. AVOID this place.

Beautiful from the outside!
Jul 2019 • Couples
We didn't have a long enough stay in Rotorua to arrange to go in during our recent visit but it looked so fabulous from the outside. The carvings viewed from the vantage points of the ornate fences were stunning.

Just a short walk
Sep 2017
We were walking round by waterfront and found out this place was very nearby so we walked there. Very close by so it was worthwhile. Got to see the meeting house...didnt go in as a meeting was in place. Saw St Faiths church and also the graves of 28th Maori battalion who fought in the 2nd World war. It's interesting as the graves are raised because of the thermal activity in area...whuch I might add we saw a bit of

BEAUTIFUL MAORI CARVING

We came across Te Papaiouru Marae at Ohinemuta Maori Village while visiting St. Faith's Anglican Church. The ochre coloured meeting house looks amazing with the detailed carvings especially the door & window.
