About
Fully catered kayak camping trips for 3, 7 or 10 days We provide sea kayaking tours and expeditions in Northland, New Zealand within the Bay of Islands and the surrounding outer coast. Instruction at both novice and advanced levels, is included. As one of the first sea kayak operators/outfitters in New Zealand - with over 29 years experience in this area - we continue to be passionate about our trips! Our trips are usually small groups and we can customise the experience. Count on delicious meals with local produce, the possibility of freshly caught seafood and baked desserts. We specialise in leading adventurous ocean kayaking trips! Technical paddling and deep water re-entry safety skills are taught on most trips. We get out to areas not visited by other tour operators. Rock gardening, sea caves and kayak surfing are available for those looking for additional challenge! Attention to detail...whether it be the meals we serve, our care for the environment, the equipment we provide or our risk management is always carefully carried out. Guides are First Aid and CPR trained and the head guides hold SKOANZ guides qualifications. Customised kayak trips can be arranged during the off season from May - November for group of any size.

We had a fabulous time exploring stunning landscapes in the Bay of Islands with our guide, Magnus. He was very knowledgeable of the area's cultural and natural history, which enriched our experience in an otherwise unfamiliar place. The meals were well-organized, fresh and delicious! Magnus was engaging and encouraged us to develop our skills on the water; with his paddling experience we knew we were safe and in good hands. Would highly recommend NZ Sea Kayak Adventures for exploring the Northland coast!

We have just returned from a 5-day Bay of Islands trip with NZSKA and are still savouring the experience. The trip was excellent from beginning to end: exquisite bays, a beautiful base campground, delicious food, wonderful energy, and to top it all an exceptionally competent and skilled guide — Magnus— whose knowledge of the ocean bays, natural history, and local culture are extraordinary!
He generates wonderful energy and is highly tuned to the needs of the group, without any fuss whatsoever. The food was excellent, and our dietary restrictions accommodated.
This is an excellent workout for body and soul. Don’t hesitate to signup with NZSKA if you are thinking of a Bay of Islands trip. We are very well-travelled and this is one of the best!

A great trip in a special place. The guides revealed the wonder of this island taking advantage of weather and the environment. A step back in time and a great way to break from the ordinary into the extraordinary.

My recent ten day trip with NZSKA of Paihia was fully outfitted, for experienced kayakers (and it is the sixth trip I have done over five years with NZSKA).
Our group of eight included two very competent guides. We started with a few days camping at Mimiwhangata whilst we familiarised ourselves with the kayaks and the conditions, then paddled NE along the coast, rock gardening and camping at fabulous scenic beaches. After rounding Cape Brett we came into the beautiful Bay of Islands for some island hopping. After ten amazing days we finished at Waitangi, having paddled around 130 km over ten days.
Not all trips are this demanding, the shorter trips and cabin/cottage based trips are fantastic too and good for less experienced kayakers. The scenery sells itself, the food is great and the guiding very professional (thank you Conor).
The Bay of Islands and surrounding coasts are world class sea kayaking destinations.

My wife and I have sea kayaked extensively from Haida Gwaii to Baja and had great expectations for this NZ trip and our expectations were exceeded. The food and equipment were great and the kayaking experience was exceptional. Our trip focused around rock gardening - playing among the rocks. Mark Hutson, our guide and previous owner of NZ Sea Kayak Adventures, is a highly seasoned rock gardener (a Lieutenant in the famed Tsunami Rangers) and took us out for 5 days along the coastline full of islands, reefs, sea caves and arches - a genuine wonderland for sea kayaking. Mark was able to find the sweet spots that could be challenging and safe given the wind and swell. In addition, Mark and his wife Sasha, were delightful companions. Mark had a wealth of guiding trips on the Na Pali Coast, swimming with Sasha along the Na Pali Coast and climbing with the legendary dirtbag, Fred Beckey. Mark stepped up to guide this trip after a personal tragedy at the last minute prevented Magnus (owner of NZSKA) from guiding. I am very much looking forward to the time when we can return to New Zealand and spend more time along this magnificent coast line with New Zealand Sea Kayak Adventures.

My wife & I kayaked for 5 days with NZSKA guided by Magnus, a keen highly skilled & seriously enthusiastic kayaker. Magnus runs NZSKA with Anais and it is a going concern with high quality kayaks & gear, and great itineraries mainly around Pahia / Kerikeri / Bay of Islands. We're intermediate kayakers with some Canadian west coast experience. He led ourselves and two others around the Cavelli group of islands north of Kerikeri with a balance of relaxed humour and, when called for, serious professionalism. We chose NZSKA essentially sight unseen based on their offering of multiday trips (cabin &/or campsite based) and Magnus' quick and clear answers to our emailed questions. We were rewarded with an outstanding trip on one of the world's most beautiful coastline. And we learned a lot of new skills thanks to his patient coaching. Importantly, safety was well managed before and during our trip. We were on the 5 day Cliffs & Caves trip. Snorkeling gear available. Also tents bags for rent. Dry sacks, paddles, life vests and kayaks plus huts & camping included but check details with NZSKA because they may vary.

7 day trip to Moturoa Island. Possibly the best sea-kayaking location in the world! Stayed at a fabulous coastal cottage with the beach on the door-step, woke up listening to a combination of waves lapping on the shore and kiwis calling in the bush. Huge variety of kayaking in the area, suitable for all abilities. Conor was a tremendous guide (and cook and instructor). A unique experience and a highlight of our time in New Zealand.

The veteran kayak company with more than 30 years experience, and it shows. Mark knows the area, the stories, the local landowners & private access to unique places. Connor is a dynamite guide, with credentials far above most area guides, and a great, fun attitude. The kayaks are a little veteran, too, but very functional.
