About
Fully catered kayak camping trips for 3, 7 or 10 days We provide sea kayaking tours and expeditions in Northland, New Zealand within the Bay of Islands and the surrounding outer coast. Instruction at both novice and advanced levels, is included. As one of the first sea kayak operators/outfitters in New Zealand - with over 29 years experience in this area - we continue to be passionate about our trips! Our trips are usually small groups and we can customise the experience. Count on delicious meals with local produce, the possibility of freshly caught seafood and baked desserts. We specialise in leading adventurous ocean kayaking trips! Technical paddling and deep water re-entry safety skills are taught on most trips. We get out to areas not visited by other tour operators. Rock gardening, sea caves and kayak surfing are available for those looking for additional challenge! Attention to detail...whether it be the meals we serve, our care for the environment, the equipment we provide or our risk management is always carefully carried out. Guides are First Aid and CPR trained and the head guides hold SKOANZ guides qualifications. Customised kayak trips can be arranged during the off season from May - November for group of any size.

We have just returned from a 5-day Bay of Islands trip with NZSKA and are still savouring the experience. The trip was excellent from beginning to end: exquisite bays, a beautiful base campground, delicious food, wonderful energy, and to top it all an exceptionally competent and skilled guide — Magnus— whose knowledge of the ocean bays, natural history, and local culture are extraordinary!
He generates wonderful energy and is highly tuned to the needs of the group, without any fuss whatsoever. The food was excellent, and our dietary restrictions accommodated.
This is an excellent workout for body and soul. Don’t hesitate to signup with NZSKA if you are thinking of a Bay of Islands trip. We are very well-travelled and this is one of the best!

A great trip in a special place. The guides revealed the wonder of this island taking advantage of weather and the environment. A step back in time and a great way to break from the ordinary into the extraordinary.

We had a fabulous time exploring stunning landscapes in the Bay of Islands with our guide, Magnus. He was very knowledgeable of the area's cultural and natural history, which enriched our experience in an otherwise unfamiliar place. The meals were well-organized, fresh and delicious! Magnus was engaging and encouraged us to develop our skills on the water; with his paddling experience we knew we were safe and in good hands. Would highly recommend NZ Sea Kayak Adventures for exploring the Northland coast!

We had such a great time with Magnus. He's not only an excellent kayaker but also a great chef! We enjoyed very much paddling with him because he could give us some tips and helped us to improve our paddling skills. My husband espacially enjoyed paddling through rock, playing with the kayak. I tried to learn the escimo roll and almost did it. Magnus was very patient and very helpful.
The food he prepared for us was just amazing, fresh fruits and vegetables on an expedition trip is just luxury.
We even saw orcas, penguins and dolphines. Also the places were we stayed overnight were always in a very nice setting.
All in all, it was definitely one of the best trips that we've done so far and I would totally recommend it to everyone who enjoys kayaking and being in the nature!

From the outset it was apparent this would be a superb trip. Magnus, our guide, was engaging, knowledgeable and great fun. The scenery and wildlife (Orca, Dolphins etc) was breathtaking. Magnus provided excellent tips and support to encourage and improve our skills (great fun attempting 'Eskimo rolls'!!). The tour provides a wide range of kayaking experience and Magnus encourages individuals to 'have a go'. The food was excellent and accommodation spot on in stunning settings. All in all a superb 7 days.

We had an awesome 5 day trip with Magnus who is an excellent guide/chef and organiser. The trip was well planned and very well catered. Each days paddle was fun/ challenging but always safe and we ended up seeing some amazing scenery, staying in some lovely cabins and seeing orca!!! Would thoroughly recommend Magnus and his team for sea kayaking adventures in NZ.

Magnus organized a 3 day paddle with 2 night's cottage accommodation on a lovely island for our group of 4. All 4 of us are experienced paddlers and have kayaked in various parts of Europe as well as Australia and New Zealand but this trip was second to none. The equipment was first class and we were delighted to be using top class Werner paddles as we do at home.

All meals were prepared by Magnus and were absolutely delicious with thought given to all dietary requirements. The weather threatened to be a challenge but held off and in fact ended up being near perfect conditions with some rolling seas adding interest to the paddling a little further out in the bay.

An absolutely fantastic time was had and the accommodation was idyllic. We will seriously be considering future trips with Magnus as the Bay of Islands is a very beautiful area of the world to see from a kayak.

I am a local paddler at intermediate level and I took part in the seven day North Eastern BOI tour. Lacking strength and confidence I started with some apprehension but I soon learned that Magnus and Anais have a plan for all weathers and conditions. However, we were never tested as they even provided the perfect sea conditions. Reading the previous reviews, I can only wholeheartedly agree with all the other positive comments made. Fantastic locations, beautiful fresh food lovingly prepared, comfortable accommodation in the middle of the wilderness ( but a safety net if it ever was needed) stable, comfortable kayaks and high quality hire gear, The tutoring in paddle skills and our surf lesson was very valuable to me. The Gear List was spot on, so was the daily distance travelled. Magnus caters for different abilities in the group. For those in need of a bit of challenge and thrill, he will find a nice gap, cave and rock garden to negotiate, but the chicken hearts can stay back and watch.

I had such a wonderful time doing what I love doing in the company of this friendly, encouraging, cheerful, easygoing but professional and competent young couple. Money well spent.
