This was my first time ever on a horse - at the age of seventy, so was a little nervous. However, we were well looked after and we were put at ease by staff.
There were just the two of us along with our instructor, so we were able to chat along the way.
There were some fantastic views from the headland near Waitangi on our short adventure and after a while I was confident enough to take pictures as we rode.
Staff to some fabulous photographs of us on the trip and then talked us through dismounting etc one we returned to the stables.
The weather was lovely so it was an enjoyable experience

Lizzy and her team were lovely to deal with.
We were match to placid steeds which certainly match my very novice experience.
The hour long ride was enough for my partner and I having not ridden for 30+ years. It made a great hange to our usual activities and would certainly go back for a longer ride next time we're in Paihia.
Loved it..!

My partner and I did the 2 hour trek where we got to swim with the horses! Wow! What an awesome experience! The guides were super friendly and made sure we were matched with suitable horses according to our experience level- my partner had only ridden a horse once before and was quite nervous, but he ended up loving it! The horses were all beautifully looked after and very happy and well behaved. We got some stunning photos taken at the lookout in Waitangi before heading down to a sheltered bay where we were able to go bareback and take the horses for a swim. Anyone looking for a unique and unforgettable experience has to try Horse Trek’n!!

I’d never ridden a horse before and decided to give this a go. Emma showed me the basics and paired me up with Ace, a very well mannered horse. She took me for a leisurely ride around the area, I enjoyed the amazing views of Paihia and even managed to take the horse for a swim in the bay. I’d really recommend this as a day trip, the horses are great for beginners and you’ll get some stunning views of the area.

Both my kids have had lessons and know how to ride. We were made to walk in single file for the whole trek- I was 3 horses from my 6yo son... When I asked if I could be closer I was told it was too dangerous to change the order.

A novice was given dancer - he was quite stroppy and she had a hard time controlling him - when she voiced her unease at him trying to nip other horses and her feeling scared she was told to see it as an adventure.

Meanwhile my son started crying because his helmet was too tight- again I wasn't allowed to get closer and only after he had been crying for 10 minutes did the guide do something about it. She traded him helmets - again he had to do it himself as getting any closer to his horse would have been too dangerous (dismounting seems to be impossible)

Although my son was on a lead throughout he got bucked off his horse- I was quicker in dismounting and reaching him than the guide who was leading him.

We were picked up by Claire who offered him a lolly and said having more scars would make him a better man....

Unbelievable - would not recommend.

I find your review of the events astonishing. I am truly sorry your son fell off his pony but you seem to interpret what happened and what was said very differently to what my guide, other customers and myself do. One of the first thing you said when I brought you back to the stables is you were kind of glad your son fell off so you get get off the boring ride... When you booked I made it clear to you that although your son had some lessons, being only 6 years old we'd lead him and keep the pace at a walk. My guide waited for the best safest opportunity to let you overtake and come closer to your children. You said your 11 yo daughter was so bored she was crying. My guide said as soon as you got closer to her you past her a twig to play with and she was tingling Bryn's ears with it. He eventually came too close to Cleo ridden by your son who kicked out to him. There is a difference between bucking and kicking out to a horse coming too close behind. I can appreciate that having 2 children asking to go faster and feeling bored puts a lot of pressure on mum. We find that keeping horses in a single file and in their preferred pecking order is the safest way to trek. When your son showed me his graze on his tummy, I told him that scars make you look like a man to help dry his tears. i did not say a "better" man, please don't distort what people say to make it sound worse. I have a son myself and found that his tears always stopped if i told him exactly the same thing. Offering a lolly and a little joke to a child feeling rightly sorry for himself is not in my view an offence. And it did work and stopped the tears...

Connie and girls are asset to Claire. I would ride with them again.....The only disappointment was the taxi came too early to pick me up, otherwise l had the opportunity to throw the hay and feed the calves. What a lovely group of staff and horses......

AMAZING.

Great for riders with a lot of experience to very little experience.

I am a very experienced rider and I loved this experience. I came with a friend who was nervous so the instructors kindly offered to take us out separately, which was amazing.

I rode Houdini, a b-e-a-u-tiful bay gelding with lovely strides. The entire ride was amazing and given plenty of opportunity to have a canter if you wish.

Spectacular views, wonderful horses and very friendly instructors. A special thank you to my instructor, a German speaking lady who was so up for taking photos for me (some stables can be a bit funny about this) and I managed to get some beautiful pictures thanks to her.

Most memorable experience of New Zealand in my opinion, I would highly recommend it.

Well worth it. We did the swim option and was fun--my isowfe's favorite of all we did in New Zealand over 2 weeks. Great for novices as well as experts. Great group leaders and owners--a fun half day!

I’ve read all the reviews and I have nothing really new to add but only to support the comments on the ride.
I road a-bit in my youth and been on a-few horse treks with my children since, but I have never road bare back in the sea!
Beautiful private bay.
I thought we would be splashing along the waters edge but no , all the way in!
Lizzie was an amazing , friendly , experienced guide and owner, who helped lead the horses into the water and then off we went swimming!!
My son whose 12 , had Bryn and loves to submurge himself totally and he found the water high above his shoulders! - loved it!!
I was changed onto Lizzie’s horse, (sorry forgot his name) who was only 5 and recently broken in, was a dream to ride.
I didn’t even realize he was swimming, it was all so smooth and gliding through the water it was surreal and an honor to have experienced this in my lifetime.

I’m not sure if this exact experience of bareback swimming is offered often, but I found it unique.
I’ve told my son to cherish this experience as he may never experience riding and swimming bare back in the Bay of Islands on a glorious day with his mum😉!

Making memories!!

Thanks Lizzie, and all the best in an exciting venture.

I went on a 2 hour ride with and swim with my mother while travelling in New Zealand's far North a couple of weeks ago. It was a fantastic experience. I am an experienced rider who works at a trail riding business at home, and my mother is also quite experienced, but we both enjoyed the entire day. We rang asking for a ride for the next day, we were told there was one that afternoon if we preferred, which we accepted. We were joined by one other rider, who had no experience, but despite all going out together, our guide (I think it was Emma) managed this well. She gave us opportunities to hang back and trot or canter up to her and the beginner. Although not the most thrilling or experienced of rides, we really enjoyed our time, and swimming was by far the real highlight.

We rode for about an hour before heading to the bay, where we unsaddled our horses and took them swimming bareback. Due to a previous riding incident, I am not confident with horses in the water, but Emma and my horse, Moana, really got my confidence back up. While the horses' feet never left the ground, splashing in the waves in the picturesque Bay of Islands was a fabulous experience. I even had the opportunity to stand up on Moana in the water!

We were well-matched to our horses, and all of them behaved beautifully. Despite being warned of Moana's bossy personality and tendancy to eat grass, she behaved like an angel for the whole ride, and was very responsive. All of the horses were so polite and well-mannered, not like the pushy horses I work with regularly. They are clearly treated really well, and are so well-trained. My mother's horse was a young ex-racehorse who had only been on the job for 6 months, and he was so relaxed and patient. Emma was a very experienced and capable horse-woman, when her horse Ace freaked out at being the lead horse (more than once) she handled it really well and gave her horse the confidence to continue.

It was a fantastic experience, although experienced riders should be sure to explain their skill-level to ensure they get the ride they want. A camera was great for all the photos we were able to get with spectacular views, and wearing long-pants is highly recommended. Swimmers are good if you're swimming the horses, and lots of sunscreen is definitely a good idea. All in all a fantastic experience that I would recommend for people in the Bay of Islands.

Kia Ora, Thank-you so much for taking your time to write such a great review! It's great to hear that yourself and your mum had a lovely ride with us. I am so happy that our lovely Moana was able to help you with your confidence in the water - she is a little cheeky but she is certainly a guide favorite too with her lovely big ears! We take pride in looking after our horses, they all have great laid back personalities we are very fortunate they seem to love life up here in the Bay. Thanks! Horse Trek'n Team
