We did the day trip to Cape Reinga, a kauri Grove, the sand dunes, and 90 Mile Beach. Our tour guide, Chris, was enthusiastic and super passionate the entire day. He was probably the best tour guide we ever had, we learned a lot while being entertained on board - even had us singing with him!

It was a long trip, and we had about 30-45 minutes at each location, which didn't feel like enough time. 30 mins for lunch, 45 mins at the lighthouse, 45 minutes at the dunes, 20 minutes at the kauri Grove. Would have been nice to have some more time at the lighthouse ...

Kia ora ling170, It sounds like you had a superb day up on Cape Reinga with our lovely driver, Chris! Sure feels like time is slow when you're having fun, right? We did a trip similar to this 12 years ago and had great memories. We booked this thinking we were taking our children (adults from UK) on a small tour ie 12 people only to find it was a full coach with Fullers great sights not awesome tours - confusing. The journey was soooo long, not enough toilet stops ( particularly in the first part) and no chance to swim or stop for a proper lunch break. Felt rushed and we were left disappointed- wouldn’t look to do this again in a hurry.

Kia ora Trisha945, There is certainly a lot packed into this day, and we're sorry to hear you felt rushed as you moved through the various sites and activities. We do wish you the best for your future travels if you are seeing other parts of the region, however. Kind regards Amanda and the team at awesomeNZ

We were underwhelmed with this trip,
The entire day is a rush.

The weather was perfect, coach was comfortable. Both lunch/morning tea stops were nice, food was good.

Lighthouse is nice - short walk (15 mins) when you arrive and we got some great pictures. The scenery is lovely.

If you have ever driven on any beach, (such as the Queensland coast) seen sand dunes and played with them before, ( in any country) and seen a kauri tree - then this is a very long boring day with which to see a lighthouse. If you’ve never done these things then you may feel otherwise.

Our driver was lovely but commentary was really boring.

Tip - take a phone charger lead, the bus has ports.
Or spend a day sailing or exploring the bay which in my opinion is a much better use of time and money.
Or self drive and break it into 2 days.

I wouldn’t recommend this trip.

Kia ora kiwaussie1, We're really glad to hear you experienced good weather and enjoyed the scenery at the lighthouse itself. We do appreciate this feedback and will certainly take on board the advice you have provided for our other potential travellers. All the best for your future travels, Amanda and the team at awesomeNZ

We joined this trip at Paihia as we were staying in Russell. Complimentary ferry tickets were part of the price. We did the ‘Double Dip’ and combined it with a trip around the Bay of Islands and saving ourselves about $60. Our driver was Robin, friendly courteous, knowledgeable...he made sure we saw the best of everything from eagles, giant Kauri and a herd of wild horses withfosls at foot. Great lunch and enough stops to make it worthwhile. Highlight for me was sand boarding. Yes it’s a steep climb but so worth it. I was the oldest person to do it...and I was so exhilarated I did it twice! Dip your toes in the Tasman Sea but remember the coach is not a 4WD so stays on the hard sand. Because of numerals drop offs we were running late for our ferry...not a problem as the lovely Robin radioed ahead and the ferry waited for us! Now that’s what I call putting the customer first!

Really glad I went, easy to see scenery on bus and easy pick up from marine point. Long journey but have breaks and cape reinga worth it, especially if don't have a car. Get to sandboard and see kauri tree on way up so journey broken up, and way back can buy fish and chips. Driver had interesting commentary and get to meet new people. Some hostel do a backpacker deal which is a but cheaper so wroth seeing if hostel does this!

Full day trip lasting around 12 hours and visiting many scenic sites. Morning tea (own cost) and lunch (provided in overall cost) where at smashing locations. Our driver/guide was very knowledgeable and friendly - he even sang Mauri songs to us! The drive along 90 mile beach was spectacular. Cape Reinga (about as far north as one can travel on New Zealand) was amazing, brilliant views and a real joy to visit. We followed this up by sand boarding at Te Paki, an experience not to miss, finishing off at Kauri world. Truly memorable trip.

We had a great day on this bus tour!

Our guide and driver, Chris, was such a nice person, very lively and gave us a lot of interesting information.

All the activities were great, from the (short) stop on 90-mile-beach, to the walk to cape Reinga, the sandboarding and the little forest walk. Fish and chips were also very good!

Overall we highly recommend this tour!

This tour was approx 11hours, which we expected, what we didn’t expect was that we would be spending it in a very old bus that had barely functional aircon, so full bus of over 40 people, 11hours on a very hot day.......not pleasant at all. The tour stops were very short, 15mins here, 30 minutes there, in fact we were encouraged to eat on the bus to keep things moving. The arranged stops were good and we enjoyed them, rainforest, sand dunes but unfortunately at the cape we couldn’t see two feet in front of us for fog so really felt this was such a waste but obviously not the fault of the company that the weather was like this there. Drive in the Beach was nice and smooth and fish and chips were good but again a very rushed stop. Our driver relied on travelers to plays their music through his PA system as he did not have any music or system on his old bus thus we had to listen to music tastes of others, mostly was ok thankfully but there were a few tunes with inappropriate language!!!. Commentary was minimal but covered the areas we were in, I’ve had better drivers that have made everyone have non stop fun and laughs, this one was not like that at all, it was just facts at the appropriate time and that was it, 11hrs of travel a little joke here and there might have lightened how uncomfortable all the travelers were feeling as they cooked and sweated it out with no aircon!!! I wouldn’t recommend this tour with this company, choose one with newer more comfortable buses suited for the trip as we travelled alongside plenty of them during our journey, so there are other choices. Not a cheap trip and minimal outlay for the company as all food stops are self paid so at least they could do is make the trip comfortable!!!!!. Book elsewhere........

Kia ora Sanmac, I'm so sorry to hear about your disappointing experience with us. Our drivers are known for providing entertaining commentary and knowledgeable information and I'm sorry you didn't receive this on the day. Our buses are equipped with air conditioning so perhaps there was a fault on the day. Can you please email us with more information so we can look into your complaint further, you can reach on us info@awesomenz.com All the best for your future travels, Esther and the team at awesomeNZ

The Cape Reinga 90 mile beach tour with sandboarding, a walk to the lighthouse, a drive on the beach, a stroll through a Kauri tree forest and a meal stop in Mangonui for fish 'n chips was indeed awesome. A great day with amazing variety--even the weather changed dramatically over the course of the day.

One small suggestion: please advise participants to pack a light rainjacket. We got soaked walking to the lighthouse!

We couldn't fault the company for the trip we had - timings were good, Robin the bus driver was excellent throughout and the food was a good standard. It was a very long day and the weather at the cape was so foggy you couldn't see anything - however like I said this was nothing to do with the company. We couldn't fault the service - hoping for a great trip tomorrow as we did the combo.
