Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I just loved it. I went there with my husband. We loved the track and mesmerising fall. Just wow. 🤩 we spent time with nature. It was so relaxing to see the falls.
Don’t go there if weather not permits.

The hike up to shine falls was a challenge but a wonderful experience and getting to the end was so challenging yet so rewarding!
Having the correct and comfortable footwear is essential.
There is a picnic table a few metres from the waterfall.
My family enjoyed the view from the beginning to the end and even met an friendly eel ha!

We went here which took an hour and a quarter. The last 6 or so km are on a dirt track to get you to the car park. There is a picnic table and a toilet ( bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitiser). The walk to the fall and back took around an hour and a quarter. . It goes through open farm land and mixed forest. Which due to the rain we had been experiencing was slippery on some of the downhill slopes. The walk is fairly easy for most but with some tricky places for the less able. I managed it!!

Well worth the 45 minute walk, starting across farmland (with cow and sheep droppings to negotiate) and along a track through regenerating native bush. The falls are spectacular, compete with a rainbow when we saw them. The track is quite narrow and there were some slippery places - a hiking stick would be useful for balance if at all unsteady. There are some huge rock formations on the farmland, and lots of bird song along the way.
We checked the mileage - 6km along a gravel road from the tar seal, and a further 6km down the road from the turnoff for Boundary Stream reserve.

Was such a beautiful peaceful walk and is suitable for young kids. Beautiful scenery along the way. Waterfall is absolutely stunning.
Although the drive is a bit out-of Napier it is definitely worth it.

It’s a 1hr 20min drive from Havelock North. The lat 14km is gravel road. Once there, the sign says it’s a 1hr walk to the falls. We walked at a decent pace and did it in 30min. As it was raining, we were the only ones there. Lovely falls. If it was summer it would be good to have a swim in the pools.

A sunny Thursday morning prompted us to drive to Heay’s access road and walk to Shine Falls. Lovely bird life along the route and otherwise peace perfect peace. The rainbow at the bottom of the falls was the icing on the cake.

There’s an hour drive from Napier, a 40 minute walk opening up to the falls! Glorious! It’s a relatively easy walk if you’re somewhat fit and coordinated. Well worth the effort of getting there

How far is this from the cruise ship dock?

It’s about a 1.5 hour drive, however the last 6.5km section is a gravel road so leave extra time in case it takes you a bit longer. Be aware the walk in and out will also take you about 45 mins each way. You can do it in less, we did it in about 35 mins, but there are some steep climbs that have been washed out in rain making them even more slippery and uneven, so again, it could take you longer if your fitness level and agility is not great. I would ensure a minimum of 6 hours to get here and back to your cruise ship in Napier to be on the safe side. There is a good chance you will do it in less, but I always leave extra time when driving any sort of distance from the ship. Don’t forget you will also need to get a hire car. It’s about a 10 min taxi ride to the airport from the ship and that’s where most of the rental car companies are. I highly recommend Peter from RaD in Napier. New cars compared to most RaD depots, excellent prices, very fast pickup, and Peter actually dropped us back to the ship even though they don’t offer a pickup/drop off service.

Hi!
My husband and I are taking a cruise with Celebrity and one of the ports is in Napier. We would like to go to Shine Falls, but there are no tours to take us there. Can we walk from the town or take a cab or some other type of transportation?
Thank you for your help!

maybe you can rent a taxi but better to rent a car instead. You can search through gps.

There are two tracks to Shine Falls (from Heays Access Road and from Pohokura Road via Kamahi Loop Track) - dogs are not allowed on either track. These tracks pass through private farmland and a 'mainland island' that protects native wildlife. See the Department of Conservation website for more information about the tracks.
Does it costs anything?
