Well I thought this was going to be another boring bike trail. Boy was I wrong! Starting from the Napier CBD we cycled 31km along the 4m wide bike trail along the foreshore, through the dunes, then the wetlands past Clive, then inland though the orchards to finish at Havelock North.

Throughout every 2-3km there are explanation boards about the discovery and settlement of the area. And the development of the horticultural industries.

At the 8km mark the Waitangi Park on the foreshore presents an excellent demonstration of astro navigation for transiting the Pacific Ocean as used by the early Polynesian explorers.

If you time this ride right, you can use the Havelock-Napier bus to either start or finish your journey back to the start, about a 40min bus trip. And they all have bike carriers on them. Although it will cost you at $2pp ;).

We did the water ride (approx 34km) as a family, two adults and children aged 7 and 11

The ride is flat and easy... and entirely either paved or on hard packed limestone or gravel. Very easy riding.

The ride goes from Marine Parade (city centre), past the port, through Ahuriri (fishing wharves, restaurants, beach), West Shore, and Bay View, before heading into farmland and wetlands. The farm tracks saw us riding through paddocks of sheep (the bikes needed a good clean afterwards).

Pick a nice day, take a picnic, you wont regret doing this ride.

Our 7 year old had never ridden more than 12kms in a day until the day before (25kms). She complained a bit... but did the 34kms easily enough. It was well within her ability.

We did this on mountain bikes, but road bikes, e-bikes, and smaller kids bikes will handle this track easily enough.

Thank you for your review. Glad you and the family enjoyed the trip, lots of snacks help the little ones. Could you complete our New Zealand Cycle trail survey please, this helps us see what works well and we can improve. The survey is on our website hbtrails.nz Thanks again :)

These are great cycling trails, we really enjoyed cycling them, but there is a bit of an issue with the signs. We found it easy to get lost.
The map from the isite is good but there needs to be better detail of the roads and junctions, there is a lack of signs and getting your bearings may be a challenge,
Ideally more signs, more regular trail indicator post markers maybe with numbers that are on the map? Better road markings on the sealed sections in town where it’s easy to get confused.
Other that that it’s a must do if your into it. Can be as long or as short a ride as you like.
We will be back and probably be more prepared with GPS and battery packs

Thanks for the feedback Derek. Regarding GPS would recommend using the Great Rides App, its free and can be installed on your phone - really helps in those busy urban settings where connecting sections of trails.

I ride this quite frequently. Because I am local and because of its proximity I generally just do the Water Ride but there is a huge network of rides to explore. One thing I love about the Water Ride is experiencing the many forms of bird life’s long the way, I generally have frequent stops to look and photograph the many species that live in this area

We cycled Hawke's Bay Trails from Havelock North to Hygge Cafe at Clifton and back. It was a wonderful experience for my partner and I - we loved the elevated stopbanks beside the Tukituki River, and the view over orchards and fields. The Tukituki river mouth was beautiful and we were so relaxed cycling along the coastal pathway. After lunch at Hygge we had an easy ride back to Havelock and felt like we'd had a real adventure!! :-0

We spent a few days 8n the Hawkes Bay Napier region rrying out the tracks, out of the 4 tracks we did they are all highly Recommended.
They are all well sign posted and the riding tracks are good surfaces.
Only let down there is a few gates that you have to get off your bikes and manually open which can slow you down a bit.
Most of the rides are flat.

From along the seafront to stop banks by the orchards we have enjoyed many of the Hawkes Bay cycle tracks. People are usually friendly and courteous en route.

These trails are really awesome and family friendly. They are mostly flat and you can do them in sections over several days or visits. Head along the coast, through the wetlands or inland to the wineries and pubs. Brilliant!

If you enjoy cycling, the Hawke's Bay Trails are a "must"! The ride from Napier to Bay View follows the Pacific Coast and the views are absolutely stunning. We also rode from Napier to Taradale, passing the beautiful Ahuriri Estuary, on our way to the wineries on Church Road. Very fun! The trails are Grade 1 (Easiest) and the scenery is outstanding.
