Takaro Trails, self guided cycle tours of the Hawke's Bay Trails, 187km of off road cycle trails which form part of Nga Harenga, the New Zealand Cycle Trail. The trails are the perfect way for visitors to visit our world famous wineries, enjoy some gentle exercise under sunny skies and explore our stunning scenery at their own pace. Takaro is the Maori word for 'play' so put some fun into your Hawke's Bay stay and get out and about by bike!

Four of us took our own bikes on a ride from Napier city centre to Te Awanga wineries and booked a return shuttle ride with Takaro Cycle tours this I'd not their usual service but accommodated us with information on where to cycle, and pick up instructions. At the end of our ride we were collected and delivered back to our city central hotel with our friendly informative driver. He also looked after our bikes at their premises as we had no where to lock them overnight.

What a great team at Takaro Trails. They looked after 8 of us, with our own e-bikes, fantastically well. Nothing was too much trouble and they were always willing to offer advice and assist. They planned a great stay including a great conveniently located hotel. Even though we had our own bikes they made inspections of them daily to make sure everyone was ok. Cycle to the next vineyard they said and if you stay drinking, they turned up, collected the bikes, the people, and more importantly the newly purchased wine. A great long weekend enjoyed by all. Thank you!

We hired bicycles through Takaro Trails for our own independent tour. It was a bit of a whim on our part - on a busy Saturday weekend. Surprisingly, they still had a few bikes left for hire. I was really impressed with the quality of the bikes; these are by far the best of any rental company I've ever used. Also really appreciate the directions/ideas they had for our half day ride. Location-wise, they're right around the corner from Crown Napier if you're staying there so it makes for a lovely half-day outing. Next time we might try an actual tour!

We hired bikes from Takaro trails to do a self-guided tour. Karen (I hope I remember the name right) was really nice to help us choose which trail would be good for what we wanted to do. The bikes were really good and comfy, equipped with tools, panniers and even a bottle of water each. Karen also came to pick us up in central Napier and then later dropped us off again.
We had a good time cycling despite some heavy rain on the way back from Taradale.
If we had stayed in Napier longer, we'd have done another a guided tour with this company, too. Would recommend!

Four of us in our sixties hired e-bikes from Takaro Trails and did most of the self-guided trails around Napier over Easter. The bikes were new and really great and Karen, Roger and Tony were really friendly and helpful. We stayed in Ahuriri, which is near their office, so Takaro let us drop our bikes off every afternoon and they charged them overnight for us. Roger let us know before we arrived that The Big Easy bike ride was on and helped us plan our route to avoid the crowds of cyclists. We did, however, go to the concert at Church Road Winery afterwards and really enjoyed it. Nothing was too much trouble for the Takaro team, including changing one of our bikes to a larger one, fitting us into their pick up schedule at short notice on the last day and then picking us up at a different time and place at even shorter notice when we got “stuck” at Craggy Range Winery. Tony even drove us back on the other part of the loop so we could see the scenery we would have missed out on. It was a superb experience and I couldn’t recommend Takaro highly enough.

Karen provides a warm welcome and along with bikes that were right for each of us talked us through the options in Hawkes Bay to cycle after cyclone Gabrielle. Just a month has gone by and while you can’t go along a couple of routes just about everything else is fine. We’ve cycle around Taradale and to the Hastings Sunday farmers market and Havelock North, bought dried figs at the the figgery. Cafes are open and there are great spots to sit and chat over coffee. Today we are off to Clifton to lunch. There are also some amazing sights - the smell of onions washed up at a bridge, twisted metal cycleway hoops and a train line hanging midair without any support. Along with the beauty of hawkes bay. Great to be here again and enjoying the outdoors.

I travelled with a friend as part of a 6 day guided e-cycling tour with Takaro Trails- what a well run and seamless experience it was. From the warm welcome on arrival at Napier airport, all our transfers, bookings made at fabulous local restaurants and recommendations for places to eat on free evenings. Karen and Roger are very accommodating, the wineries visited were great, the included tours very interesting.
The eating options generally in Napier and Havelock North are outstanding.
We stayed an extra day after the tour was completed and were able to extend the hire of our bikes for that time which made local exploring so much easier.
Can’t recommend this experience and this company highly enough.

As a family of 4, we had a fantastic time doing the 2-day Baycation tour with Takaro Trails this weekend. Prompt communication, awesome service, very good accommodation and great bikes. Thanks heaps Karen & Roger, we will be back. Highly recommended to anyone wanting to discover the Hawke’s Bay trails!

Very friendly efficient business,hired 2 bikes for 2 days as we had no car,great for getting around to Napier CBD along great cycle ways and out further to wineries.Bikes for all ages and capabilities.Highly recommend

The team at Takaro Trails exemplified service, from ensuring we all had bikes we were confident and comfortable on to spending time discussing which trail would best suit our aims for the day. We (two couples) enjoyed an excellent day visiting wineries, Puketapu Pub, cycling through vineyards and orchards the back to Napier along the waterfront. Highly recommend this company.

What is the difference between the "Half-Day Self-Guided Hawkes Bay Coastline and Wineries Cycling Tour" and the "Self-guided biking tour of Hawkes Bay wineries"?
Do both tours have e-bikes?
