this is such a beautiful walk and right outside our room, great to watch people walking their dogs, and swimming every day, and so andy to walk to all the restaurants and bars

Easy walk with excellent views. The tide was in when I walked and I was told afterwards that is the best time to do this walk as otherwise the estuary can get a little whiffy. Definitely a pleasant and enjoyable way to spend an hour.

We cycled the estuary as part of the route back from Mission and Church Rd wineries, much nicer than roads and plenty of birdlife to see

We were disappointed that we couldn’t walk the distance as some sections were under water. It is obvious that these areas need bridges or walkways built up.

We spent a very hot few hours walking to , around and from this place and saw virtually nothing whilst there. A few butterflies and the normal bird life but nothing new. It is very hot on a sunny days so take water. I see other people have really enjoyed it but we couldn’t find anything to get excited about, sorry.

Walks everywhere. Over old historical embankment bridge. And can bicycle ride slowly as well.Just giveaway all walkers.

Use google maps in satellite view. Can see all the extra places. And ask the locals. Go explore.
See photos.
Like from south end of old embankment bridge (there is a fresh water tape there, look for it on the east side of old road) , walk west under expressway then along the stopbank to where the end of the airport runway is. And watch the planes land and take off.
Like on north west side of expressway is the bird watching bush reserve. Labels westshore reserve on map.
See my “tour of Napier plan” post somewhere in here.

Travel just past Ahuriri towards Bayview and park the car up.
Great time to visit is sunset.
Walk the expansive boardwalks passing by Maori totems and local artwork.
The estuary holds a vast array of wildlife birds, fish and plant life.
Take time out to relax and contemplate, a great walk.

This is a family friendly walk. It is easy going on mostly flat track not concrete.

It goes around the estuary and also over it at stages.

The Ahuriri Estuary Wildlife Reserve is located just a short drive away from Napier CBD before we were walking in nature along the 3.2 kilometre loop pathway, signage estimated it would take one hour at a leisurely pace. As the tide was out the estuary was not particularly scenic, I'm sure it would be much nicer with more water. We enjoyed reading the information boards along the way detailing aspects of the estuary.

The one hour loop walk is wonderful, very educational and interesting for young children with a few information boards that explains the environmental/ scientific facts. We came at low tide, pass through a bridge and boardwalks across the estuary. It would be even more beautiful at high tides and there are kayaks for rent.
