- LalalaNl3 contributionsFabulous secret treasure to exploreWhat a hidden treasure! Was recommended by a friend and it did not disappoint. We purchased the family "Out of the box" adventure - a bit like an outdoor escape room. All the family involved in trying to solve the clues (which revolve around the sculptures and environment) as you wander the 2km track. Would have been (even more :)) delightful without the children (8,10,12) but they got involved and had a good time, figuring stuff out. The whole story of the arboretum is pretty amazing and the variety of sculptures and differing landscapes is totally fascinating. A lovely time to visit with blossoms around too. There is also a little cottage on the land which one can rent - that's for next time! Can't believe it's not better known - really is a fantastic way to spend a couple of hours :)) Very well maintained tracks and good signage. Charming staff :) Go there!Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 2 October 2023
- Kees V4 contributionsA very beautiful Sculpture Park hidden in a former quarry. An amazing beautiful park that deserves a lot of visitors! A formal stone quarry transferred into a stunning park in which you could wander for more than 2 hours to look at over a hundred sculptures, beautiful trees and bushes. And have a lookout for 15 hidden owls!😁 You are welcomed by a most enthusiastic lady who would tell you a lot about this beautiful park. It deserves your visit for sure!!Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 4 October 2023
- okinawafox17San Diego, California3 contributionsAn excellent way to spend the afternoon! We were looking for something to do with enthusiastic and energetic kids. We also didn't want to break the bank, and this was reasonable priced. The place sounded interesting... and it was! Sue at the check in was awesome and informative. It was so cool to imagine that 40 years ago it was a barren quarry. It blew our minds to realize that everything there was planted and grew in the last 37 years. It is amazing. So beautiful! Lots of fun sculptures to look at and look for. The hunt for all the owls kept us engaged. There is also an "Escape Room" type game you can play for a larger fee. It is a good hike up and down the mountain, so you can feel like you got your workout in! Good for kids, but Probably not good for strollers or wheelchairs. Also worth noting: They thoughtfully provide umbrellas, which we took advantage of and we were glad we did, as it did rain on us. There is also a bathroom about halfway around. The kids gave it two thumbs up. We loved all the amazing art, and really enjoyed reading the story behind some of them. We also really loved Sue.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 December 2023
- Raewyn TTauranga, New Zealand13 contributionsGreat place for a wanderLovely spot for a wander. Takes about 1hr15mins to go slowly around the loop. Statues and sculptures really good. Some a little hidden so you have to keep an eye out or you'll miss some. Easy track to follow and good map provided.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 5 January 2024
- Earthhat5 contributionsSHHHH THIS IS A GREAT KEPT SECRET!!!This place is a must, we took the road less travelled from Hamilton to Matamata, and this was along the way about 15 mins from Hamilton Gardens. The welcome from Sue was lovely, she gave us hints and tips to get the best visit. If you like art theres 120 sculpure set in nature trails, surrounded by birds and wildlife. Lots of areas to stop and rest and try to spot the Rurus. good for all the family. Really recommend a coffee and the amazing ginger crunch at the end.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 February 2024

It is a beautiful setting, was so peaceful and we saw so many lovely sculptures, lakes, birds etc. What a wonderful activity.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 11 February 2024

- Global207208392413 contributionsWhat a HootI went with my mum and 2 aunties and we all enjoyed it. Trying to find all the owls was fun and I found 11 out of 14. Took a heap of photos and was a lovely morning walk. Probably not the best for people with bad knees.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 February 2024

So different and well designed with the added Ruru sculpture hunt to help focus on the walk, Such varied planting which was so lovely with the variegation of there autumn leaves. Wonderful hospitality for our group with delicious lunch and carrot cake. What vision this couple had to see the transformation from a quarry to such a place of beautyVisited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 14 April 2024
- gernita24Auckland Central, New Zealand309 contributionsQuirky sculptures in a lovely settingWe really enjoyed our visit to the sculpture park. We wandered around the pathways spotting the quirky sculptures and admiring the trees and flowers in the sunshine. We met the owner and had a chat about how the place has evolved over time - he was very friendly. It’s good to know that the sculptures change every now and we thought it would be nice to go back in a different season.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 April 2024

We visited the park after a gap of some years and were blown away with what had been achieved! There was such an obvious knowledge of plants their positioning, variety and propagation. The planning, present and future ie the planting of pines on the road to the quarry,30 years ago, now felled and the profits used to plant Asian trees and shrubs propagation on site, to plant on a difficult steep gully for the future. The sculptures provided interest of different kinds, some thoughtful, some very cleverly made and some provocative. We loved it and wish the owners all the very best for what they had achieved.

We had such a lovely relaxed afternoon wandering around these gardens for a few hours. Quite different to your typical structured museum-type experience. You can spend as long or as little time as you like exploring the grounds enjoying the natural surroundings and finding art where you didn’t expect it. We visited on a drizzly afternoon but the rain didn’t lessen our enjoyment. The staff were warm and friendly, happy to have a chat or leave us to head off on our wanderings. I’m glad my husband found this place and added it to our itinerary, we both very much enjoyed our time meandering through here. You can see a lot of work and love has gone in to making this place what it is

Had a spare day in Cambridge. An easy drive and was welcomed by two horticulture students. Loved the self guided tour with time to reflect and browse the many fine vistas and artworks. A credit to the vision and passion of the couple who developed the park. Spring blossom and flowers were blooming. Looking forward to returning in the summer when the trees will be in full leaf.

We spent 2 hours here on a Monday morning and had the place to ourselves. The path is a loop with some side paths. It was fairly gentle other than a steep section upwards near the beginning and the steps down to the quarry. There are a lot of sculptures and they are scattered throughout the path so that there is always something interesting to look at it. Good fun to try to spot all the ruru sculptures also. Overall very worthwhile!

This is such an interesting place to explore. Thousands of trees and shrubs have been planted, both native and exotic. The interesting water areas and large number and variety of sculptures makes this a fascinating place to visit. The paths are well constructed with very good signage and maps. Allow up to 2 hours for the walk, you will not be bored, there is so much to look at. It is an absolute credit to the people who established and maintain this park, most of whom are volunteers.

The sculpture park and arboretum is amazing. The story of how it was created from a disused quarry is wonderful. The owners, John & Dorothy Wakeling and their staff were very cool. The trees, plants, flowers, and sculptures are well worth the short drive from Tauwhare, not far from Hamilton. 37.77839° S, 175.46967° E

We had an easy cycle ride out to the Sculpture Park from Cambridge not realising how great this place is. We were welcomed by the volunteers at the Park and given an overview of the history and how the Park has evolved to where it is now. We were also given written information as a guide as we wandered through the Park. what an amazing place and a tribute to those that had the vision to transform an old …..relatively lifeless quarry to a flourishing space of regeneration, plantings, birdlife, easy tracks to navigate and the added addition of beautiful sculptures that highlighted the transformation of this space to one full and mindfully caring for our environment.
What an amazing place to visit. We will back with our mokopuna as this is a place that is an interactive and fun place for children to visit.
One visit is not enough!
