Horace Moore-Jones lied about his age to get into the war, he was actually to old to join. He was an artist and when at Gallipoli sketched the famous painting of Simpson and his Donkey. Altogether he painted over 80 sketches of and about Gallipoli. Declared medically unfit he returned to New Zealand. In 1922 he was living at the Hamilton Hotel which burst into flames, while recurring others he suffered burns and dies in Hospital shortly after. His Statue is on the centre of Victoria Street almost opposite where the Hamilton Hotel was

In the centre of the main road, almost impossible to reach through the traffic is the memorial to a local soldier who survived the war only to die rescuing people from a fire.

This statue is of a New Zealand soldier and artist. The statue depicts Moore-Jones sketching, kneeling on a seven-tonne slab of stone cut from the battlefields of Gallipoli. After returning to NZ he lost his life saving others in a fire at the Hamilton Hotel. The statue stands outside the existing Hamilton Hotel building

Horace served with the NZEF at Gallipoli during WWI as a sapper in an engineering unit. He died in Hamilton from injuries received rescuing people from a hotel fire. He is remember here. Stop and see the memorial and read his story.

So good to see a local war hero honored. .As well as his later help in a local hotel fire that cost him his life. What a wonderful person to have as a local hero. It is a beautiful work of art and stands proudly to be seen by all. Maybe a brief of his life could be added to the statue, although where it is is not as accessible as it would be in a park.

A piece of history revealed at the city centre street, the statue of Sapper Horace Moore-Jones, a soldier, war artist and then heroic figure who lived and died in Hamilton when he selflessly entered the burning Hamilton Hotel and subsequently died while saving others from the fire of 3 April 1922. A very detailed and beautiful bronze statue of this hero now on the middle of Victoria Street, and the naming of the adjacent road to a new name Sapper Moore Jones Place as a tribute to unsung hero of Hamilton. You can find this statue in the road island in front of 161 Victoria Street Hamilton, when you do strolling in city centre area.

You can't miss this as it is in the centre reservation on Victoria St. It is fantastic and a great celebration of a local hero. The art work of the statue is fantastic in my view.

The work was created by New Zealand Defence Force artist Captain Matt Gauldie to celebrate the life and heroism of Sapper Horace Moore-Jones and to commemorate the centennial of the WW1 Gallipoli battle. It is a touching rendition of a hero.

A little difficult to notice it unless you know where to look. I was expecting to find it in an area to itself like in Memorial Park but it is in the middle of a traffic island in Victoria Street. It is a nice statue but there is nothing around the base to explain about Sapper Moore-Jones and the fact he was an influential artist during Gallipoli. Worth a quick look but should be in a more peaceful and scenic place.
