Only one staff member on duty and she worked hard to deliver excellent service on a Friday lunch. We ordered a beautiful platter to accompany our wine flights which we enjoyed under a large tree on the front lawn.

Stunning venue (on a nice day). We had the platter which was superb value for a really good quality platter. Lovely wines - my highlight was the Irwin Chardonnay 2018, superb drinking already!

Hi Ian, So glad you enjoyed your visit, sounds like you had an enjoyable time. We're quite happy with our Irwin Chardonnay and yes it is just as beautiful to drink now as it will be in a couple of years! Thanks for your feedback too, hopefully we see you back out here again!!

We loved Matawhero wines; platter and experience. We could have spent all day there. Cannot wait to visit again. Super friendly staff; amazing wines (esp the Opou) and great platters.

Having visited on 2 previous occasions we were most disappointed. The outdoor seating area had ankle deep grass and tables, chairs and bean bags scattered in a disorderly manner. The interior of the tasting room seemed unloved. The staff seemed disengaged and whilst we didn't want a 'flight' lacked any conversation about the wines. There was no upsell in the take away area, rather what was on offer was pointed out from a distance. Being visitors to the region, we purchased some wine and on arrival home found that the cellar door price was higher than our local fine wine retailer and significantly higher than the nationwide online distributer of the Matawhero brand! Times have changed! We still love your wine and will continue to be enthusiastic supporters/ambassadors of the brand

Hi Michael, Thank you for taking the time to review us, you've listed a fair few points. Having great fertile soils means not only producing lovely wine but that also our grass seems to grow at an uncontrolable rate, but we do mow them on a weekly basis so it doesn't become a jungle out there. Yes our cellar door is a little aged and not like most modern vineyards out there today, but we think that it adds to our rustic charm (and being one of the oldest cellar doors in the region you can expect it to be a little rusty in places). It's a shame that you seemed to have poor service from our staff during your visit and we will be making sure to bring this to their attention so future guests don't have a similar experience. As for the prices found elsewhere in the country we can't control what price is set at other stores/retailers and if you can get it locally for a better price then that's a great offer! We wouldn't want to be undercutting those that support us. Thank you for supporting our wines and hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in Gizzy!
