Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Forget all the other “rail trails”! On this one you actually get to ride on the rails!! Talk about smooth! With your companion next to you and no need to steer it’s way more relaxing. If you have uneven numbers one of you can go with the guide. A delightful trip through a varied landscape leading to a breathtaking coastal lookout. You do need to be moderately fit ( or take the e-bike option) as the trip is basically a gentle climb up for the first half. But then it’s downhill all the way home!

We had a great time on our rail bike tour, we opted for the e-bike option which was definitely worth the slight addition in cost and made the ride a chilled and very unique enjoyable experience
We would highly recommend!

Wonderful scenery, unique experience. Jeff was personable, professional and full of great information. We went in August, so the air was crisp and the landscape was green. Enjoyed seeing the new born lambs along the way. Unfortunately the clear cutting of the forests creates mudslides during the rainstorms, so many people don't fight the road repairs to get to the coast...but it is well worth the effort.
Fantastic scenery and a great day out.

Absolutely the best experience.
We didn't hire the e-bikes but managed as we are mid range fit.
Geoff was on time & really knowledgeable of the area & the railway.
Just DO IT!

One of the best experiences throughout our 3-week New Zealand trip! You will not regret this unique experience. The guide is super friendly and really chill, the rail course is a comfortable bit of exercise for the average to very fit. E-bike options are available but really take away from the fun. You will see fantastic landscapes, great bridge and water crossing, and pastures of sheep! It was absolute fun. You'll be away from the roads and experience the interior farmlands around Gisborne. We did this as a group of 6 (even numbers are best) and really enjoyed our time. If you're in Gisborne, this is must-do activity! Pack water and a snack and enjoy the smooth ride atop railroad tracks - we loved it!

This is one of the highlights of Gisborne. Such a fun day out. The beach loop was an easy ride and showcases a lot of different landscapes. Would highly recommend to both tourists and locals!

Very grateful to Geoff for accepting our late notice booking. We had an awesome morning cycling through the beautiful countryside, over bridges and through the tunnels to the coast. What a fabulous concept - well done to Geoff for having the vision and perseverance to make this happen. The e-bikes make this accessible to all ages and fitness levels. Would highly recommend!

Favourite part? Everything. I couldn't stop laughing at first pedal because I couldn't get over the buzz of such a unique experience. My partner and I had big smiles on our faces most of the ride. So fun and freeing! Electric bike is a must if you prefer to relax and enjoy the views! You're the man, Geoff! What an awesome thing you've got going!

Great half day in the sunshine, cycling is very easy, great views. We really enjoyed the trip and highly recommend it to others. Bikes are well set up with carrier on the back, water bottle holder, and cellphone carrier on the front. Good views out to rocket lab launch site.

i travel a lot by myself. I have been on all other rail adventures except this one. I will be in Gisborne area next Jan/Feb. I see it has to be two bikes together, could i ride an e bike by myself or be joined by a guide or put with another individual.

You can't be on a bike by yourself but you can share with the guide.

It was around $110 per person but you have to do it as a couple as two of you need to be on the bike. In my opinion it was well worth the money, and a real highlight of the trip to Gisborne as you only see parts of the country only accessible by rail.
