About Tamaki Hikoi
Enjoy some of Auckland’s most illustrated locations, with experienced guides from Ngati Whatua Orakei. As ahikaa (keepers of the fire of Auckland) we will provide a first-hand experience of the rich history of Ngati Whatua Orakei and Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland). On our "HOME FIRES OF TAMAKI" walk, enjoy views of the spectacular Waitemata harbour, Auckland CBD and beyond. Walk through lush native bush, explore barracks from the 1800's and gain a deeper understanding of the cultural and historical significance of beautiful Takaparawhau - Bastion Point with your Ngati Whatua Orakei guide. "HEAVEN TO EARTH" Hikoi begins at the dormant volcano Maungawhau (Mt Eden), the site of a majestic pa (Maori strategic stronghold). You will walk past iconic Auckland landmarks, stopping along the way at places of historical significance to Ngati Whatua. Your guide brings Auckland’s unique landscape alive through storytelling, song and customs. Our Taupua Tour is a full escorted experience by van.

This is an outstanding introduction to learning about the Maori Culture in a non-commercial setting. We were lucky to have Dana as our guide for only the 4 of us, and he did a wonderful job of starting with their history and culture and bringing it all to the present. All 4 of us were very impressed, learned a lot and recommend this tour.

We had a large group of about 10 people, a few who had never been to NZ before and we all thoroughly enjoyed the Hikoi. Our guides Dane and Mervyn were very knowledgeable, open to questions and shared their stories. By the end of the Hikoi, we felt like we were part of the family. Highly recommend the tour if you want to learn more about the local Iwi and history, and for stunning views of Auckland.

Dane was an incredible guide: so welcoming, knowledgable, and friendly. He met our university group on our first day in New Zealand: despite jet lag, all of the students really enjoyed the experience. He got everyone engaged and laughing, and was able to provide us some really useful information about the powerful history of the area. It was incredible to hear the stories of the Bastion Point occupation from someone whose family lived through that. Impressive and inspiring to see how the tribe's sacrifice, perseverance, and vision has brought them to a position of influence where they are now building a secure future. Our deepest thanks!

My wife and I are Americans who have lived in Aotearoa New Zealand for 10 years, and recently moved to Auckland. We wanted to know more about our new home city, and who better to teach us than the historical caretakers of the land, Ngati Whatua Orakei. Our guide Dane was friendly, funny, charming, and very knowledgeable. He taught us about history, culture, and even some new vocabulary as he guided us metaphorically from the first journey from Hawaiki, to the arrival of the English, the gifting of the 3000 acres that would become Auckland, being forced off their land 100 years later, taking a stand at Bastion Point, and being an active part of the reconciliation necessary to move into the future together. All the while taking us physically through half a dozen different locations, each with strong connections to their history, and culminating at the summit of Maungawhau / Mt Eden. We're very happy with the tour, and would recommend it to anyone visiting Auckland (and many already living here!).
