Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

We took our daughter here for a swim, but she actually spent more time on the playground. Rangitoto provides a scenic backdrop across the channel. The beach itself had a lot of mud mixed in the sand. The surf was negligible. The water was turbid near the shore, but cleaner a few meters out where it was still only knee-deep. Our daughter started a cycle of playing in the muddy sand, wading out into the cold saltwater, rinsing and repeating. The area was fairly crowded, but not too crowded to find a place to play. There were changing rooms and toilets. The best thing about it was the playground full of kids.

Excellent for walking with dogs. The sea is very quiet. Quite a long beach to walk. Unfortunately there aren't toilets we could locate around. There may be one hidden somewhere.

Lots of large interesting shells for those who like to collect. Parking was tight on a Wednesday night. Lots of good and varied restaurants.

If you like crowds and dogs its paradise. Great restaurants just off the beach (yes dog friendly), and a funky town centre (with more dogs). Lots of water sports some of which is quite impressive to watch. Great for walking as you can access other beaches by walking along the clifftop edge. A good suggestion is to walk as far as possible and Uber back. If you want a more serious beach experience head off to the west coast of Auckland on a good day only.

This wonderful beach is a kilometer from one end to the other which has an abundance of golden sand and crystal clear, perfectly safe swimming waters.

Amazing beach, awesome cafe's and yummy restaurants and bars!
Pretty much all you need is in one place.
They got a massive playground for kids, quiet spots on the beach to relax.
Water sports on weekends... everything!

We visited the new playground, right on the front. This is a great play area for children, but very busy. There are lots of different areas for all age groups.
Also wooden loungers where you can sit & look out over the bay, great view of Rangitoto.
From there you can go on to the beach. This is a great beach, busy with walkers & dogs. It appeared a clean beach. Great to walk along & admire the great beach fronted property.
Close to parking & a cafe. Well worth a visit.

All our family lovely Takapuna beach. A walk to the end and back is always pleasant and in any weather. At the moment dogs are welcome on the beach whereas in the summer they are only allowed early morning and evening. The beach is a slow descend into the sea with lovely white sand and hardly any rocks so makes it a lovely place to swim. The view to Rangitoto feels like the island moves as you walk along the beach. There is also a wonderful cafe at the end. The houses are grand and it is enjoyable looking at the architecture. Whatever the month, Takapuna beach is a wonderful place for a picnic, walk, swim or people watch, there is always something to see. A definite favourite, it's also exciting place to be when there is a storm and watching the waves crash.
This review was for April 2016, but honestly, I could write a review for nearly every month of every year.

I came here twice, once at low tide and once again at high tide. My experience at low tide was far more enjoyable. I was able to actually sit on the beach, while at high tide I had to sit on the grass next to the beach and there was very little area to walk around on. Also at high tide it was impossible to walk along the beach to the cafe, which was very easy at low tide. But the beach is clean and beautiful either way.

Takapuna Beach is one of the prettiest I have visited in the Auckland area. Come when the tide is low, and take a beautiful walk up the coast.
If you have the chance, take the bus to Takapuna sunday morning, and eat your breakfast at the farmers market next to the bus station, then stroll down the beach and enjoy life!

Can we swimm there in December or in other beaches?
Written 18 September 2018
Hi, On our next trip to NZ to meet up with family we were thinking of renting house in Auckland area. So many beaches.... Getting very confused with where to go. Want somewhere where there is something for the children to keep them occupied age 5 and 8 and shopping for adults as well as a few day trips. What are Mairangi bay and campbells Bay like?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi. You will find that all the East Coast Bays on the North Shore are quite similar. Takapuna, Devonport and the small village of Brown's Bay all have shopping and supermarkets so food items are always readily available. Great swimming in the bays and very safe. The best months are February March as most of the schools here have reopened for the new year, not so many people as most have returned to work and also the prices are lower and the weather is quite settled. Enjoy your vacation, I know you will love it here.
