I got to the Holy Trinity Cathedral of Auckland with the Explore Bus ride, the Cathedral was closed that day, they were doing rehearsals and interior decoration, which I could see through the windows. But the chapel of Santa Maria was open, where I could enter into it. Very beautiful both the chapel of Santa Maria and the Cathedral "Holy Trinity Cathedral", super recommend a visit.

Holy Trinity Cathedral was opened in 1959, in the rather industrial Gothic style of Guildford Cathedral. Then the money ran out. The work was begun again in the 1990s, and the completed cathedral opened in 1995. The visitor is immediately struck by how different the two halves of the building are. The new nave is modern in style, with some references to Coventry, in the angled stained glass windows along the north and south aisles, letting light in, but only revealing their colour when you pass them and look back. They are beautiful and accessible, illustrating the life of Jesus using traditional Māori artistic style. The two building styles rammed together shouldn’t work, but somehow it does. Perhaps it exemplifies the major change in the church’s thinking between the 1950s and 1990s. This has created a large, lovely and practical cathedral which feels inclusive and outward-looking and reflects NZ’s changing history. The fine organ is English, by Nicholson of Worcester, installed in 2017. NB; we had the good fortune to be here on the first Cathedral Choirs Festival for 10 years, when choirs from Auckland, Hamilton, Napier, Wellington and Christchurch performed.

In contrast to the rich wood interior of St. Mary’s, Holy Trinity Cathedral has two distinct parts. One is Gothic and the other is more contemporary. The large stained-glass window in the front of the church features a Polynesian theme with bright colored motifs. Its floor and ceiling are made of wood. The organ has 5,432 pipes. The Nave in the second part of the cathedral is similar to a traditional Māori meeting house. The design of this space can also be used as a community multi-purpose gathering place. More stained-glass windows are found along both sides of the Nave, depicting stories from the Old and New Testaments. Recommend a visit to both the Cathedral and the Church of St. Mary.

Cathedrals such as Holy Trinity offer visitors a bit of history and art. The stained glass was beautiful and they have the largest pipe organ in NZ. The wooden ceiling is impressive, as is the altar carved from medieval stone. HT is the mother church of the Anglican Diocese and holds 2,000 people. If it isn't open, ask if it's possible to see inside the smaller, attached, historic ST. MARY'S CHURCH (they opened it for us.) It has a wonderful ceiling, lights, and a carved owl on a beam near the pulpit, plus an adorable carved mouse at the pulpit's lectern (underneath on left.) He's the adorable Mouse of Kilburn. Friendly, very helpful staff. This is on the Explorer Hop-On route and well worth a stop. Great pastry shop across the street.

We went in to check it out as it was on the hop on hop off and I'm so glad we did the stain glass windows are worth the look in alone absolutely huge and so colourful it really makes the church. The church itself is huge and they offer you a map so you can see certain places. There is a clear glass prayer room towards the back which is also stunning.

We attended a Handel Opera here. This is a great performance space but is still an operational place of worship. The stained glass is Pasifika modern woved into classic Gothic touches. These are really worth studying. The one towards the back on the left as you enter is my favourite. It has lots of different styles of kete/woven baskets worked into it.

Thoroughly enjoyable visit. A beautiful modern structure with breathtakingly beautiful stained glass. They recently added a new organ, designed, built and installed by a UK firm. It is the largest pipe organ in New Zealand, the largest church organ in Australasia, and the largest organ to be built in the UK since the 1940s. Installation was completed in June 2017. It will be played by the best organists nationally and internationally, not only during service but also for concerts and recitals. The cathedral is definitely worth a visit.

We were fortunate to have a personal tour by the priest, and saw both the original church and the new cathedral, which combines neo-Gothic and modern architecture with wooden ceilings reminiscent of long boats. The stained-glass windows portray Maori, Polynesian and Christian tradition in a New Zealand setting.

I was invited to an interfaith gathering, and the spirits soared with the expressions of a genuine shared desire for peace and understanding.

I stumbled upon this glorious cathedral while on a stroll. The modern cathedral has sublime stained glass - the colors and messages are filled with diversity and integrity. The docent encouraged me to visit the old chapel next door - so glad I did. Stained glass featuring a suffragette? AMAZING! I loved Auckland and loved this place. If I lived here, I would stroll around and meditate here. The vibes are high. Gorge on the eye candy for a while. Breathe.
