We found out about this museum by chance as it wasn't listed in many guide books. We chose to go by ferry to Half Moon Bay and onwards to the museum. This proved to be rather awkward as bus driver hadn't a clue where the museum was. A local couple on the bus took pity on us and gave us... More

This is a place mostly students and young ones will enjoy. As it dates them back hundred years. People, staff here still wearing clothes from mediaval years. Very interesting history of mankind. I love it.

They have collected a number of houses and buildings appropriate to the time when the first European settlers arrived in the area in the mid 19th century. The cost of admission was reasonable and there was so much to see that we happily took a couple of hours there. The docent that day was welcoming and very helpful, even knew... More

the Howick Historical Village is an amazing place to go to. It documents, though its buildigs, scenarios and exhibits, the colonialisation of the Auckland Isthmus. We have to recognise that the British colonialisation of New Zealand is part of the EnZed experience, we cannot hide it, nor pretend that it didn't happen. People were brought from the other side of... More

The replicas and information in this setting lets you touch history. We love historical things and this place is a gem. You can see and feel the progress from first settlers arriving to later "mansions" of the next generations. There is small cafe where you can have lunch and enjoy the place at leisure. On certain days there are costumed... More

I spent 2 hours looking around the village (could have spent longer but it was nearing closing time). Found it all very interesting and the village is well laid out with informative displays where you can learn a lot. The lady on reception was very helpful and food at the cafe looked good - I was too late for lunch... More

Great experience for the kids. The kids had an activity of finding things that were of this day in age, that looked odd inside the olden rooms. this was a fun activity for the kids. They also got to play with olden day toy's, the kids loved this. Inside toys and outside toys. Great service from the staff, thank you

Went there yesterday with two visiting friends. I have been a number of times but it never looked so charming as yesterday. The Hollyhocks blooming in the gardens, bees buzzing, ducks quaking. A peaceful oasis in a mad world. This is a very special place which tells the story of early AUCKLAND in a very professional way. Not really beaten... More

We loved the Howick Historical Village, Auckland's open air Museum. We stopped here on our way to the Coromandel in mid-November. The Village offers a step back in time with over 30 authentic buildings dotted around the village from yester year. The buildings are authentic buildings that have been re-located; repaired and reconstructed at this site and amazingly include churches,... More

We have been to a number of these colonial-era open-air museums in Australia and the US and this is as good as any of them. The docent provided us with an excellent introduction and we spent a happy hour and a half looking around the 30-odd buildings. The useful interpretation panels gave a good feel for the ups and downs of...
