Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Highwic is a historic site situated near Newmarket, a bustling and busy suburb and shopping area of central Auckland. It it easy to get to this tourist venue because there are many different bus routes that feed into Newmarket along with the train station there. There is also parking at this venue if you want to go by private vehicle.

Highwic is a good place to visit in the summer because you can enjoy wandering around the sizeable garden which still makes up much of the property. Visiting there will transport the visitor back in time to an era of opulence in Auckland city among those with money and upper high social status.

Made of timber, the house is well built with decorative designs and finishings and was tastefully furnished for the time period. Well worth a visit if you want to be transported back in time to a bygone era while appreciating the stately home's architectural design.

Alfred Buckland's Gothic mansion is well worth a visit if you are interested in history and architecture. This gem is situated in busy Newmarket - an oasis among modern life.
If you are lucky, the ladies that bake muffins and cookies in the original stove, may invite you to sit down and share a cup of tea with them. Don't forget to stroll around the gardens and imagine colonial New Zealand.

This house has its own carpark which we didn't realise so we parked in the street nearby and paid at the machine. It's in a busy area of Newmarket but is up on the hill with a good view. A quiet oasis in all the hustle and bustle. Good info about the family and history on display and a lovely garden.

A lovely, well preserved early Auckland home, quiet yet on the fringe of busy Auckland streets. The New Zealand Heritage has done a wonderful job in conserving this must visit!

very easy to find and get to, it feels weird to be near a mall and walking around an old estate like highwic. very well presented with lots to look at. they welcome children and had a easter bunny hunt to gain their engagement. Hearing the little man with us shout with excitement when he found a bunny was great.

Highwic is a hop and skip from downtown Auckland within the New Market neighborhood. I walked there from the Grafton Bridge. If you follow the MapQuest directions they will get you there. It is open Wed. to Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A small admission price is worth the cost to keep this classic beauty in good repair. Some say the house is haunted!

The house has a fun and interesting history for a family of 21 children. The father was married twice (the children gave the house to the City Council). As the family grew, the house did too. spending her declining years at Highiwc. The building includes a ballroom, seven bedrooms, a boy's dormitory, a laundry, kitchen, scullery, outside stables, grooms accommodation, a billiard house, and a service yard. (Some of the bedrooms are now staff office and closed to the public.)

We'd driven past this place a hundred times, we didn't know it was hidden behind the high hedge on Gillies Ave by the traffic lights at the motorway offramp southbound. Glad we know now though. Its a wonderful old Auckland mansion from yesteryear, which is full of the history & furniture of the original settlers who built the place. It gives a great insight into what life was life for those early settlers, with helpful volunteers, a nice little shop & pleasant gardens. Well worth the $10 entry fee for a couple of hours of living history.

I hadn't been here for years and went with my daughter and grandchildren on Sunday. The two children were not keen but once they arrived were enchanted. The eleven year old went home and read the booklet that we bought from cover to cover. This is a really worthwhile vist.
