We purchased tickets through @Fullers360 to see Tiritiri Matangi Island and we were taken to the island via the Explore Group ferry. The ferry is engaging in an unsafe practice. When we boarded the ferry in Auckland and exited the ferry on Tiritiri, the plank was horizontal so we could simply walk on and off the ferry at the ground level. When we left Tiritiri, the ferry's crew mounted the plank nearly fully vertically to the middle level-- not quite sure why. This involved placing one end of the plank on precarious wooden blocks and then attaching the other end to the middle level via flimsy chains. Then, one after another of us travelers had to pull ourselves up on this vertical plank, with the use of the handrails, to the middle level, from young children to senior citizens, and others who were not in the best physical condition. For some, this was quite strenuous. At any moment, those chains could have snapped, or the blocks could have moved. I said to the captain, who was overseeing the installation of the plank, that "I didn't sign up for this, " and he said, "You'll be fine." Incredible! Someone needs to address this unsafe situation.
The island itself is wonderful. And our tour guide Gill was extremely knowledgeable about the birds and the flora on the island. We would recommend spending the extra $10 NZ per person for the guided tour with the volunteers who work to conserve the island. Our guide knew exactly where various birds were residing, and we saw many.
