My wife and I went on the full day canyoning experience with Cam as our guide and our day was amazing. Cam was very helpful and calm the whole day and always made us feel safe and relaxed. The canyon area is beautiful and was certainly an achievement abseiling the 50m drop being scared of heights! Would do this again in a heartbeat!!

Amy and Ewan did an excellent job guiding me through the amazing adventure. They were very patience and calm, and provided easy instructions that helped my nerves.I felt very safe and secure, while still getting that adrenaline rush. If I didn't have time constraints from the cruise ship, I would have signed up to do it again, and again. We repelled down 4 cliff sides into bodies of water, and did 2 jumps into water, 2 crawls over rocks and logs, and some hiking at the beginning and the end. It was extremely fun, and I want to do it all over again with my best friend.

I have visited Kitekite falls a million times having grown up out west, however viewing and experiencing the falls and surrounding nature through the form of abseiling/canyoning is something else. I booked the Full Day Canyoning tour as a surprise wedding anniversary adventure, we had an absolute amazing time and we're already planning on coming back to do a night-time canyoning trip sometime soon. Our guide Cam was awesome, explaining every step to us clearly and giving advice throughout our trip, as well as, providing us with good banter. Tania also gets a special mention for being amazing and organising a trip to happen on Labour weekend. Hands down, recommend this place to everyone. Can't wait to come back!

Great day out. Our guide created a safe and fun atmosphere from the get go. There was tons of amazing abseiling, vast view over native bush, a couple of rock jumps, a small eel and just the right amount of adrenaline. Thanks to Ewan and the team.

We had a great day out with Jade and Elise as our guides (and Amy too). There were 10 people in our group, but everyone was really well looked after although it did mean there were some long wait times. Even though I was feeling nervous, there was nothing to be scared about! The guides make sure you’re safe all the time by giving good instructions and excellent support through the abseiling. Loads of fun, I would recommend for a really fun day out!

Landed in NZ from the UK and 3 hours later we were in the safe hands of Elise ,ably assisted by Amy, climbing up to the top of the canyon.
Safety was always at the forefront but you had the definite Adrenalin hit satisfied. Abseiling down a waterfall and leaping off rock ledges with a lunch stop you definitely could not walk too!! Great trip but you must be reasonably fit and not scared of heights then you’re in for a great treat !

The day as a whole was amazing. Thanks to the amazing guides (Adam and Jordan) made the whole group feel safe and encouraged throughout the entire adventure. An amazing experience I would recommend to anyone that loves the outdoors or wants to try something out of their comfort zone.

We had an incredible experience with Cam and the crew. The canyon is truly majestic and the experience of being out in nature starts before you've even clipped on. Abseiling down the waterfall was magical and a chance to conquer my lifelong fear of heights. I felt safe at every stage and the experience suited every member of our group, whatever their age and ability. This is kiwi tourism at it's best.

We spent the day with AWOL Canyoning as part of a cruise excursion, and it will definitely be the most memorable outing of our vacation. Amy and Ewan were excellent guides, patient, funny, and very competent. I finished the day feeling as if I had not only challenged myself but also had an exciting, fun day in a gorgeous setting. I highly recommend AWOL for anyone looking for a bit of adventure!

This was a fantastic experience. Very safety conscious and I felt completely secure during the trip. It was evident guide Ewen had assessed both our capabilities and the environment of the day. I had moments of being very nervous but was so well supported to complete this adventure, I feel I really accomplished something way out of my comfort zone. Stunning nature at its best. Some fitness and flexibility would be beneficial to the enjoyment of the day. Highly recommended, I will come back again ! Thank you Ewen, your guiding put me at ease to complete this personal challenge!

We have a full day in Auckland before leaving back for the United States. What is the time frame of the full day tour? How far from airport? Is this doable with a 7:30 pm flight?
Written 13 August 2019
Hi! In summer some of our trips leave at 8 am (others leave later) from Auckland central and return around 4 pm. Its about a 40 min drive from there to the airport. If you are flying internationally you may have to check in 3 hours prior, in which case its cutting it fine.

hi cam how was your day also is piha good for a non swimmer family of 8 teens
Written 13 August 2019
Hi Cam, our half day trip would be more suited for a group of non swimmers. We will provide life jackets and have an extra guide handy just to keep an eye on things around the pools of water. Theres only two spots in the half day that are more than chest deep. 95% of the time people are in shallow water. We will assist people through the deep water if they are keen to try, otherwise we can set up alternatives to miss the water features. Hope that helps :)

My daughters and I thought the AWOL canyoning experience was awesome, but I wouldn't honestly recommend it for non-swimmers. Although every answer you've received so far is correct... very little swimming required, it just doesn't seem to me like an adventure for a non-swimmer. If you're good with the life jacket, you will have no problems at all. Just make sure you like the water and don't mind going under (because that is part of the fun!).

I can swim, but not very well, and I was just fine. That being said, there are only a few places on the Piha tour where you can't touch the bottom initially (not far from a place where you can though, so you can just dog paddle a few feet). But for those who truly cannot swim at all, AWOL does provide life vests. You just have to tell them at the beginning of the tour when you are getting suited up (as well as on your booking form I believe). But in the grand scheme of things, this tour has very little swimming involved. There are a few jumps into deep water, but I think you can even bypass those if you prefer.

We would love more information. My daughter (23) and I are in very good shape and we would like to try abseiling as well as anything else you offer.

My daughters (22, 20) did the AWOL Canyoning at the end of April and it was awesome. You need to carry all your gear in and out and it is a bit of a hike, so it is good you're in good shape. The repelling is quite an adventure if you haven't done it before... but the guides make sure you are safe. You won't go wrong if you chose to give AWOL a try.

I plan to go in September. Climbing down the waterfalls--isn't the water cold? I'm worried this will ruin the experience.
Written 18 September 2016
Hey! I just did the tour on September 15th. It was chilly and POURING down rain! But as soon as you are in the wetsuit, it really is a lot warmer than you would expect (and the hike up warms you as well). Now, when you first jump into the water, it is super cold, but then you're acclimated and it goes away. You may think the rain would ruin the experience, but the way I look at it, you are already in the water and wet anyway - so the rain doesn't make it any worse. In fact, it's actually quite beautiful since you are in the middle of the rainforest. Yes, you'll get a little chilly at times, but nothing that ruins the experience.

Will the weather / water be too cold if I'm planning to visit early in August? What would you recommend to bring to keep warm during the adventure? Looks like the waterfall water will be really cold in winter!
Written 18 July 2016
Hi, June and July the coldest months. August usually tempertures ok (not warm though!). We have full length wetsuits, wetsuit socks etc, but extra thermal layers for the top half is always a good move. We can double up wetsuits if you feel the cold easily. But we are running 3 to 4 trips right through and poeple are still having an awesome time even mid winter! cheers, Cam

Hi, my husband and are are from the states and I am a flight attendant and he is a pilot. We are not huge adventure enthusiast and I must admit I'm probably not in the best shape. With that being said, I am wanting to do those once in a lifetime experiences while on our visit to New Zealand. I understand that there is some physical difficulty at some points in this adventure I want to make sure that we don't ruin anyone's experience nor ours but this seems like an absolutely amazing adventure. May I get some peoples input regarding the difficulty of this adventure? Thank you in advance,
Jill :-)

Jill, for me and my wife it was first time for abseiling (canyoning) in New Zeland! The place and the AWOL people, where we bought this adventure were excellent! The best time for this is in the summer, and they provide the clothing and equipment! The tour is exhausting, walking with the equipment is the canyon, to the top, where the view is stunning, but it requires a great physical conditioning. But the team of 15 people who did the tour together, were two gentlemen 75 and 81 years. We were surprised by the health and efforts of these gentlemen, an example of determination. I hope this will help them make the decision.
