We absolutely loved our afternoon tasting wines at three vineyards out west. Our guide was an exceptionally nice man, our two trip mates were wonderful company and of course we tasted some really great wines. We learnt quite a lot about tasting and food matching too. We can highly recommend this company.

We have joined wine tours all over the world, but few have been as wonderful as the day we experienced with John and Auckland Wine Trail Tours. John put together a fantastic itinerary that started with a tour of some of New Zealand's beautiful natural scenery before taking us to four exceptional wineries. We worked up an appetite while walking to the black sand beaches and waterfalls we visited in the morning, and we really liked how we had the chance to see some beautiful places off the tourist path. The wineries we visited were perfect choices; the wines offered were diverse enough that everyone found multiples wines they loved. The winery selected for lunch was equally great- the included lunch was delicious and filling. John is incredibly knowledgeable- about wine, about New Zealand, and about how to make sure his guests have a truly memorable experience. He was very attentive to each of the guests on the tour, and by the end of the day it felt like we had known each other much longer than just a few hours. When our travels take us back to New Zealand, we will look forward to booking another tour with John- he's an incredible guide.

My husband and I were on a cruise that didn't arrive in Auckland until noon. We wanted to visit some local wineries but couldn't find a tour that fit the timing. Fortunately we found Wine Trail Tours. John already had a tour lined up for the afternoon but he graciously allowed us to join the group. We were able to visit 3 wineries, and also the Gannett Refuge (Maukatia Takapu). The first winery was a disappointment in taste and how fast they pushed us through, but the other two, The Hunting Lodge, and Cooper's Creek were great experiences. Overall we had a wonderful afternoon. John was a great tour guide!

We did the 1/2 day tour and felt a bit rushed the whole time. From the beginning the guide was asking us to hurry along. We spent a week in NZ and found one of the real highlights was the genuine, friendly locals. Our guide wasn't rude, but he wasn't friendly either and it stood out after so many positive interactions. We were informed that our 2 year daughter would not incur a charge for the tour, but only because it wasn't high season. Our guide also balked at us using our AmEx card because he complained he wouldn't get the money as fast as Visa or MasterCard, despite the fact that they take AmEx. We have toured many different wine regions and found this guide/tour to be below average. Overall the quality of the vineyards visited were good. We enjoyed 2 of the 3 vineyards very much.

Hi Megan & Mark, firstly let me say I take note of your comments. I am disapointed you didn’t have the best experience that I want all my customers to have, that is reflected in these reviews, and apologise for the dissatisfaction you both felt. As lawyers you obviously realise that there is responsibilty on both sides of an agreement. So by way of explanation, in my defence... We had arranged and agreed to meet and depart your hotel at around 1.45 but only one of you was there with the baby at that time so we had a delay while Mark returned from going somwhere to buy coffee. We then had a further delay while he fitted the baby seat. During this time I mentioned we had to pick up another customer who by now would be getting anxious and wondering where I was as we were now around 10/15 minutes late. I wasn’t “rushing" you just for the sake of it… I was concerned of becoming quite late for the other customer. My concern was borne out as on the way to pick up Scott (who you made friends with during the afternoon, another lawyer…!) he called on his mobile to say he was waiting as I guess he was now getting worried about me running late. I don’t know why you are commenting on getting a free seat for your baby in low season… you seemed very pleased in our emails? Did you get a free seat on your flights or a free bed in the hotels…? Yes I prefer Visa or MasterCard to Amex, most businesses do and many don’t even take Amex. I don’t see anything wrong with explaining about having a preference… Amex can take a couple of weeks to pay and charge more. I’m pleased you enjoyed the wineries and the wines and apologise once again for your dissatisfaction. Regards John Meadows.

We along with two other couples recently did this tour after cruise ship docked in Auckland, Want to mention if doing this try for the all day tour, as the afternoon was VERY rushed. Guide was excellent and did try to move things along but bottom-line was you pay 120.00 NZ each for about one glass of wine each.
We had to pick up another couple that were on the day tour at their lunch spot, and that entailed a wait (thru no fault of guide) then we visited two wineries Our guide was very knowledgeable but at 2nd winery we spent time listening to our server repeating the long story we just heard from our guide instead of sampling. Also made a stop at beautiful scenic overlook.
So give this a try if you like, go for the day long tour for any value though

Hi again John... thanks for sending in a review of the tour... I must say I'm a little confused over your comments... you specifically requested only visiting two wineries which I had to get the other people on the tour agree to, we would normally have visited three... It's a bit misleading to reduce the 'value' of the tour to how much wine you drank. I would say you were offered at least 16 to 18 samples. Also your ship was leaving at 6.00pm and you had to be back on board at 5.30 (we're usually back in city around 5.00) so obviously there was significant time pressure... your companions asked me at least twice during the afternoon if we were going to be back on time...! There is a difference between being 'rushed' and not being late... You didn't miss out on any tastings at the second winery, they always pour 7 or 8 samples. Thanks again. Regards, John Meadows.

We had the absolutely BEST day with John. It was not only a fabulous day visiting four wineries along with a delicious lunch, but we went to the west coast and viewed nesting birds as well as saw a black sand beach. The wines were great! John was very knowledgeable. And we had a delightful time learning from the various wine stewards.

Nice way to spend an arvo and nothing wrong with the trail but rate it average in comparison to similar in Hunter Valley NSW, Tuscany Italy etc. If a WI E trail is your gig then by all means go for it and make your own call. No doubt a Sunny day filled with wine is not a bad way to watch your day slip by.

John picked us up at our hotel, we picked up one other guest and then went off to see the sights and, of course, vineyards. His knowledge of the area and his profound knowledge of the wine we were tasting was superb. So, a mini bus just for 3 gave us great space. Taken back to our hotel on the return. This attraction could not be improved thanks to John. Book now to reserve a space.

My wife and I visited Auckland recently for the first time and were excited about fitting in a wine tour while we were there. We booked the Wine and Waterfalls tour. We had an amazing day and John was a great host and excellent guide. This tour was amazing it covered so many diverse places in the Auckland area from rain forests to black sand beach to many picturesque and beautiful wineries. A 5 out of 5 stars!!

On our final day in Auckland, our group was set to do the waterfall and wine tour. We did arrive 45 minutes later than anticipated due to traffic and it had been a very rainy night. Due to that, our tour guide (who I was never actually introduced to, do I cant even tell you his name) suggested doing the west coast tour instead of the messy waterfall walk. We agreed and started our tour about 10am. There was no discussion of which wineries we wanted to visit, types or wines we preferred to try, nothing of that nature. There were only 6 of us on the tour all sitting in the first 3 rows of the van behind te guide. I couldn't hear anything he said on the very few occasions that he pointed something out during our drive. We stopped at beach area for a walk along a track where there again was not much guiding or information giving, we just followed the track. The guide and driver were taking pictures of the area as if they had never seen it before either. We then went to a black sand beach and that's about all the information he gave us. It was pretty, but I would have loved to know more about the area or why that sand was black instead of the gold or white color in other places. We made it to our first winery where they didnt seem to be expecting us or know who our guide was which surprised me after reading so many reviews before we booked, I would have thought the wineries in the area would recognize the guides.
The wineries themselves were amazing. The individuals at each one were great and very informative about their product. The tour guiding portion of this was just so disappointing. We drove basically in silence from place to place. We could have driven ourselves around to these places and come out with the same amount of knowledge.
I know this review is completely opposite of every other review on here. There is such an extreme difference that I even double and triple checked that this is the right company we booked with and it definitely is. I wish we had recieved the tour that all of the other reviews have raved about, but instead we are left feeling like we just completely over paid for some regular wine tastings. It was an unfortunate way to end our time on the North Island.
