Exciting, I'd never been to horse-race; Ellerslie - the prime spot for horse racing in the Auckland – cool. I have gait/walking challenges (stroke), wear a legbrace. Wandered around the site, taking photos of horse-statues. Lots of people dress up, or not - just enjoy the raceday, great ideas for the nextyear's outfit. Booths outside, or inside in the air-conditioned cool of the stands, to place your bets; quite a few places to eat & drink both inside or outside. Up-close to the horses, at the times when we ventured outside onto grass, just about-to-race, or just after – exhilarating. Sunny with cool breeze, fab day out.

This is the premier place for thoroughbred racing in the Auckland area. People dress up for the occasion and it is a fashion show as much as a race. Betting on the races is, of course, a major activity. Public transportation (buses, trains) from Central Auckland are available, so the place can be accessed without difficulty. The Auckland Racing Club is a favored venue for events, such as weddings and meetings. There is plenty of entertainment, restaurants and bars in the area.

Had a great day and can see the horses right where you are standing on the grass with no obstruction. Had a wonderful day, food was good as well.

Went yesterday with our group for the 40 year anniversary where we (mostly same 12+ group every year) always meet in the main public stand, self cater with our own sustenance style food to get us through teh day as we drink and punt away the 5 hours up to Melbourne Cup time and enjoy the grand atmosphere....this year the Racing Club has done a great job of smartening up the ground floor with new tables/leaners and chairs (albeit needing lots more as some **** decided to take mine after I left it unattended but obviously taken) and the big pull down screens....fantastic apart form the simple factor that of the 3 large screens were not on at all despite us asking several times........ridiculous, and even the smaller screens in the same places were not switched on. We had a lovely older couple that had set up specifically pre race one to have the view and comfort as it was too hot to go outside. Is it that they don't give a toss about the public??? Teir biggest race day and they can't get it right or even close.
Another tip too if you are going to set up bar service with a gueueing system then use it - just tlike previous years the people waiting correcting had to watch while those ignorant b.....rs who just walked up past them to the bar were served first.
