Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.

Melbourne's first settlers landed here in 1835, aboard the schooner Enterprize. John Pascoe Fawkner outfitted the ship, but he wasn't actually
on board. For most of the early history of the colony, this was the heart of Melbourne.

This small park is one of the most significant historic sites in Melbourne. On 30 August 1835, the schooner Enterprize landed the first settlers, who became the founders of the city of Melbourne. Enterprize Park later became a centre of immigration; cargo was also landed here. The park is on the north bank of the River Yarra, between the Melbourne Aquarium and Queens Bridge Street; it's easy to find. The site was also a camping ground for the indigenous inhabitants. The council is upgrading the area to make access more convenient. Melbourne Day is celebrated here every year.

Melbourne's first European settlers landed here on 30 August 1835 aboard the Enterprize . That's almost exactly 186 years ago. The passengers on the Enterprize established a settlement. This area became a hub for shipping, migration and commerce. The area had been a camping ground for indigenous people. This area, between Queens Bridge and the Melbourne Acqarium on the north bankof the Yarra. is being revived by the City of Melbourne, with the participation of the traditional owners.

Melbourne was settled in 1834, which is relatively recent even by Australia's standards. The first settlers arrived on the ship Enterprize, which carried skilled workers, and also domestic animals. The passengers included the first European woman to land in Melbourne. She was also the first European woman to become a mother. The cut-away section of the Yarra River is known as the Turning Basin, where ships would turn around to return to Port Phillip Bay. Enterprize Park is close to the CBD, it's worth a look.

At this time Enterprize Park is fenced off due to some ground works being conducted. The park is somewhat visible through the fencing and it looks like a rather nice spot. Hopefully it is not closed for too long.

Today's Queens bridge marks the alignment of these once ancient and beautiful waterways, and the Aboriginal Art works poles, 'The Scar Project' marks the curve of the original lagoon.

This special site also holds the memory of the first European boat establishing a settlement on 30 August 1835, 'The Enterprize' drawing up to this once muddy river bank and unloading its first foreign cargo of European tents, animals and colonists germinating the seeds of the urban landscape that now rises up around you.

This site marks not just a significant Cultural site for the Kulin people, but marks the site of utter change to a human civilization that had literally been on this site for thousands of years. Those first ships changed everything forever for Aboriginal people and it is here that that change begun.

I walked here from Platform 10 at Flinders Street, following the Yarra River until I arrived at the park. It's a delightful place... a great use of a small green space. Queens Bridge runs beside it and it thrums with trains, a steady amount of foot traffic passes the park by and at the time of day I was there ( quite early in the morning) no one was sitting to enjoy this area...but I can see it being well used. There is some lovely indigenous art being shared here as well.

Enterprize Park is by the Yarra River and has some degree of shelter under the railway viaducts. There are lawns and seating and it is close to many things. There is some nautical history on display as this was the original port of Melbourne.
