I was set to visit the penitentiary and arrived about 10 past 12 to be told "the 12 o'clock tour is full". I said that was Ok as I prefer to find my own way around such attractions but I was told this was not...More

As some of the other reviewers have mentioned, try to time your visit with one of the regularly scheduled tours. The guide was a little quirky but he knew his stuff and it was really interesting to hear the stories and history of the compound....More

We visited this site as part of the Gallows Walking Tour run by Hobart Walking Tours. It was a fascinating place, and although only the chapel remains, it contains cells and the gallows as they were when in use. With a guide, it provides a...More

This tour is relatively newish and not advertised as much as the usual tourist attractions but we found it a very pleasant surprise and enjoyed it. We have two young kids 11 and 13 and they were enthralled throughout. Parking was easy and our guide...More

Port Arthur apparently gets 400,000+ visitors per year and the Female Factory around 50,000; I wouldn't be surprised if the Penitentiary gets even fewer, given its relative lack of advertising and word-of-mouth. It is, however, a good complement to the other convict history sites and...More

We did a ghost tour with the fantastic Mark in late December. Thankfully, due to daylight savings, there was still some sun during the tour, otherwise I would have been too scared to continue. The tour takes you through all the buildings of the site...More

Wasn't sure what to expect when we arrived, but it sure turned out to be well worthwhile. The guide was interesting and informative, the AV display was excellent, and it really was a fascinating and worthwhile tour
