The variety of plants and ecosystems are really good but for us the highlight was the conservatory with the carnivorous plants, orchids, butterflies and other special plants. We also thought the water tanks turned into stages and theatres were really well done.
Cairns Botanical gardens are definitely worth a visit if you have the time. Do both sides of the gardens. One side has a boardwalk through ferns & pandanas. Walk all over he way through to the lake. Tropical & very nice. There are also a...More
Immerse yourself in another world of beauty - natures glory of greens tall and small. The conservatorium has many butterflies cruising around, delighting people as they occasionally land for a close up view.
We only had a short time to visit before leaving Cairns, and wish we had scheduled more time. From what we saw it was one of the most impressive, beautiful, lush, tropical gardens we have ever visited. I literally gasped at the amazing flora. It...More

Half a day spent at the Botanic Gardens and adjoining Centenary Lakes is ideal. Visit the Orchid House with the butterflies, and cross Collins Avenue to walk along the boardwalk to the Centenary Lakes with the Chinese Gardens. The Botanic Gardens Restaurant is known for its breakfast and waffles. If you are fit - walk the Red Arrow to Mount Whitfield or spend longer and walk the Green Arrow and you may come across a cassowary. Check out the Tanks and see what is exhibiting or catch a performance. These concrete tanks were built in WW2 by the Americans to store fuel. They have great artists from around the world perform there and the acoustics is fantastic. The last Sunday morning of each month there is the Tanks Markets. Also once a month there is Starlight Theatre in the Botanic Gardens. You could also take guided walks through the Botanics. Enjoy the beautiful Cairns Botanic Gardens.
